अर्जुन ने कहा — यदि मैं वहाँ जाता हूँ, तो अनेक श्रेष्ठ वीर यह कहेंगे कि मैं युद्ध में भयभीत हो गया हूँ! तब अर्जुन ने भीमसेन से कहा — सांसप्तक मेरी सेना के सामने खड़े हैं! उन एकत्रित शत्रुओं का पहले वध किये बिना यहाँ से हटना मेरे लिए सम्भव नहीं है! तब भीमसेन ने अर्जुन से कहा — हे वीरों में श्रेष्ठ, अपने बल पर निर्भर होकर मैं सञ्जय ने कहा — शत्रुओं के मध्य अपने भाई भीमसेन के उन दुष्कर वचन सुनकर, अर्जुन ने राजा युधिष्ठिर के दर्शन की इच्छा से वृष्णिवीर कृष्ण से कहा — "हे हृषीकेश, इस सैन्य-सागर को पार कर अश्वों को आगे बढ़ाइए। हे केशव, मैं राजा अजातशत्रु के दर्शन करना चाहता हूँ।" सञ्जय ने आगे कहा — जब केशव अश्वों को हाँकने ही वाले थे, तब दाशार्हकुलशिरोमणि हृषीकेश ने भीम से कहा — "हे भीम, यह कार्य तुम्हारे लिए कोई अद्भुत नहीं है। मैं अब यहाँ से जा रहा हूँ। पार्थ के इन समस्त शत्रुओं का संहार करो।" तत्पश्चात् हृषीकेश ने शत्रुताड़क भीम को सेना के अग्रभाग में नियुक्त किया और उन्हें संशप्तकों से युद्ध करने की आज्ञा देकर, गरुड़ के समान वेगशाली अश्वों द्वारा अत्यन्त तीव्र गति से वहाँ प्रस्थान किया जहाँ राजा युधिष्ठिर थे। तब वे दोनों नरश्रेष्ठ — कृष्ण और अर्जुन — रथ पर आरूढ़ होकर उस राजा के पास पहुँचे जो अकेले अपनी शय्या पर लेटे हुए थे। दोनों रथ से उतरकर धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर के चरणों में प्रणाम किया। नरश्रेष्ठ युधिष्ठिर को सकुशल देखकर दोनों कृष्ण उसी प्रकार आनन्द से भर गए जैसे वासव को देखकर अश्विनीकुमार प्रसन्न होते हैं। राजा ने भी उन दोनों का उसी प्रकार अभिनन्दन किया जैसे विवस्वान् अश्विनीकुमारों का, अथवा जैसे महाबली असुर जम्भ के वध के पश्चात् बृहस्पति ने शंकर और विष्णु का अभिनन्दन किया था। धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर यह जानकर कि कर्ण का वध हो गया है, हर्ष से परिपूर्ण हो गए और उस शत्रुतापन वीर ने हर्षावरुद्ध कण्ठ से उन दोनों को इस प्रकार सम्बोधित किया।

If, O Arjuna, I go there, many foremost of heroes will then say that I am frightened in battle !' Then Arjuna said unto Bhimasena, 'The Sam- taptakas are before my division ! Without slaying those assembled foes first, It is impossible for me to stir from this place !' Then Bhimasena said unto Arjuna, 'Relying upon my own might, O foremost one among the Kurus, I will fight with all the Samsaptakas in battle ! Therefore, O Dhananjaya, do thou go thyself ! — ' "Sanjaya continued, 'Hearing in the midst of foes, those words of his brother Bhimasena that were difficult of accomplishment, Arjuna, desiring to see the king, addressed the Vrishni hero, saying, 'Urge the steeds, O Hrishikesa, leaving this sea of troops ! I desire, O Kesava to see king Ajatasatru !— ' " "Sanjaya continued, 'Just as he was on the point of urging the steeds, Kesava, that foremost one of the Darsarhas, addressed Bhima, saying, 'This feat is not at all wonderful for thee, O Bhima ! I am about to go (hence). Slay these assembled foes of Partha f Then Hrishikesa proceeded with very great speed to the spot where king Yudhishthira was, O king, borne by those steeds that resembled Gadura, having stationed Bhima, that chastiser of foes, at the head of the army and having commanded him, O monarch, to fight (with the Samsaptakas). Then those two foremost of men, (viz., Krishna and Arjuna), proceeding on their car, approached the king who was lying alone on his bed. Both of them, alighting from that car, worshipped the feet of king Yudhish- thira, the just. Beholding that bull or tiger among men safe and sound, the two Krishnas became filled with joy like the twin Aswins on seeing Vasava. The king then congratulated them both like Vivaswat congratulating the twin Aswins, or like Vrihaspati congratulating Sankar and Vishnu after the slaughter of the mighty Asura Jambha. King Yudhishthira the just, thinking that Kama had been slain, became filled with joy, and that scorcher of foes thereupon addressed them in these words in a voice choked with delight.' "
