शुकदेव जी ने कहा — हे राजन्, हेमन्त ऋतु के प्रथम मास में नन्द के राज्य ब्रज की गोपियों ने कात्यायनी देवी की आराधना का व्रत धारण किया। इस व्रत में वे घृत में पकाए हुए चावल का आहार करती थीं। हे राजन्, प्रतिदिन सूर्योदय के समय वे कालिन्दी के जल में स्नान करतीं और नदी के तट पर बालू से देवी की प्रतिमा बनाकर उनकी पूजा करतीं। सुगन्धित पुष्प, माला, नैवेद्य, धूप, दीप तथा नवीन पत्र, फल और अक्षत — इन सब उपचारों से वे देवी का पूजन करती थीं। इस प्रकार पूजा सम्पन्न कर वे देवी से यह प्रार्थना करतीं — "हे देवी कात्यायनी, हे महामाया, हे परम योगिनी, हे जगदीश्वरी — गोप नन्द के पुत्र हमारे पति हों, ऐसा आप कृपा करके विधान करें। हम आपको प्रणाम करते हैं।" इसी प्रार्थना को बार-बार दोहराते हुए ब्रज की गोपियाँ यह व्रत करती रहीं।
English Summary
The auspicious Sukadeva said :—O king, on the first month of the Hemanta season, the damsels of Braja, the kingdom of Nanda, engaged themselves in the performance of a vow for the adoration of Katayayani by living on rice cooked in clarified butter. O king, performing ablutions in the waters of the Kalinds at the time of sun-rise, and creating a sandy image of the goddess Katyayani, they worshipped her on the bank of that river, with fragrant flowers, garlands, offerings incense and lempi; as also with various other articles such as fresh leaves, fruits and rice. After having worshipped the goddess in this manner they prayed unto her as follows : aoe “O: goddess Katyayani, O thou of potent illusions, O most excellent Yogini, O empress of the worlds, do thou so ordain, 96 SRIM AD-BHAGAVATAM that the son of the cow-herd Nanda may become my husband.
