काण्व ने कहा — देवताओं, दैत्यों, गन्धर्वों, मनुष्यों और अनेक ऋषियों में से कोई भी मातलि को अपनी पुत्री के लिए योग्य वर नहीं दिखा। तब रात्रि में अपनी पत्नी सुधर्मा से परामर्श करके मातलि ने नागलोक की यात्रा करने का निश्चय किया। उसने मन में सोचा — देवताओं और मनुष्यों में मुझे अपनी गुणकेशी के सौन्दर्य के अनुरूप कोई वर नहीं मिला। निश्चय ही नागों में कोई उपयुक्त वर मिलेगा। यह विचार कर उसने अपनी पत्नी से विदा ली और अपनी पुत्री के मस्तक को सूँघकर मातलि पाताललोक में प्रवेश कर गया।
English Summary
"Kanwa continued, — 'And It so happened that amongst the gods, the Daityas and Qandharvas, men and numerous Ris/u's. none was regarded by Mat^h as an eligible husband for his daughter. And having held a con- sultation then in the night with his wife Sudharma, MaCdli set his heart upon making a journey to the world of the Nagas. And he thought within himself,— Amongst both gods and men I have not found a husband fit, in respect of beauty, for my Gunakesi. Surely, one may be found amongst the Nagas — And saying this, he took his wife's leave and sniffing gthe head of his daughter, Matali entered the Nether region."
