सञ्जय ने कहा — द्रोण-पुत्र को परास्त कर, जो अत्यन्त दुष्कर और महान् वीरतापूर्ण कार्य था, वह धनञ्जय, जो शत्रुओं के लिए अजेय था, हाथ में धनुष ताने हुए अपनी सेना की ओर दृष्टि डालने लगा। वीर सव्यसाचिन् ने अपने उन योद्धाओं को, जो अभी भी अपनी-अपनी व्यूह-रचना के अग्रभाग में युद्ध कर रहे थे, उत्साहित किया और जो पूर्व के पराक्रम के लिए विख्यात थे उनकी प्रशंसा की, तथा अपनी सेना के रथियों को अपने-अपने स्थान पर दृढ़ता से खड़े रहने के लिए प्रेरित किया। अजमीढ़-वंश के अपने भ्राता युधिष्ठिर को न देखकर, मस्तक पर मुकुट और कण्ठ में स्वर्ण-हार धारण किए हुए अर्जुन शीघ्र ही भीम के पास गया और राजा के विषय में पूछते हुए बोला — "राजा कहाँ हैं, यह मुझे बताओ।" यह सुनकर भीम ने कहा — धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर कर्ण के बाणों से अंग झुलसा कर यहाँ से चले गए हैं। अब वे जीवित हैं या नहीं, यह संदिग्ध है। वे वचन सुनकर अर्जुन ने कहा — इसीलिए तुम शीघ्र यहाँ से जाओ और कुरुवंश के उस श्रेष्ठ पुरुष, राजा का समाचार लेकर आओ। निःसन्देह कर्ण के बाणों से गहरे घायल होकर राजा शिविर की ओर चले गए हैं। उस भीषण संग्राम में द्रोण के तीखे बाणों से गहरे विद्ध होने पर भी महान् पराक्रमी राजा ने विजय की आशा में, द्रोण के वध तक युद्ध-भूमि नहीं छोड़ी थी। पाण्डवों में वह अग्रणी, महामना राजा आज के युद्ध में कर्ण द्वारा अत्यन्त संकट में डाल दिए गए। उनकी स्थिति जानने के लिए हे भीम, तुम शीघ्र यहाँ से जाओ। मैं यहाँ रहकर समस्त शत्रुओं को रोकूँगा। इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर भीम ने कहा — हे महायशस्वी, भरतवंश के उस वृषभ, राजा की स्थिति जानने के लिए तुम स्वयं जाओ।
English Summary
Sanjaya said, 'Having vanquished the son of Drona and achieved a mighty and heroic feat that is exceedingly difficult, of accomplishment, Dhananjaya, irresistible by foes, and with bow outstretched in his hands, cast his eyes among his own troops. The brave Savyasachin, gladdening those warriors of his that were still battling at the head of their divisions, and applauding those among them that were celebrated for their former achievements, caused the car-warriors of his own army to continue to stand in their posts. Not seeing his brother Yudhish- thira of Ajamida's race, the diadem-decked Arjuna, adorned, besides, with a necklace of gold, speedily approached Bhima and enquired of him the whereabouts of the king, saying, 'Tell me, where is the king ?' Thus asked, Bhima said, 'King Yudhishthira the just, hath gone away from this place, his limbs scorched with Kama's shafts. It is doubtful whether he still liveth !' Hearing those words, Arjuna said, 'For this reason go thou quickly from the spot for bringing intelligence of the king, that best of all the descendants of Kuru ! Without doubt, deeply pierced by Kama with shafts, the king hath gone to the camp ! In that fierce passage-at-arms, though deeply pierced by Drona with keen shafts, the king endued with great activ ity, had still stayed in battle, expectant of victory, until Drona was slain ! That foremost one among the Panda v as, possessed of great magnanimity, was greatly imperilled by Kama in to-day's battle ! For ascertaining his condition, quickly go hence, O Bhima ! I will stay here, checking all our foes !' Thus addressed, Bhima said, 'O thou of great glory, go thyself for ascer- taining the condition of the king, that bull amongst the Bharatas !
