युधिष्ठिर ने कहा — जब महाराज वसु नारायण के इतने परम भक्त थे, तो फिर किस कारण से वे स्वर्ग से पतित हुए और क्यों उन्हें पृथ्वी के भीतर धँसना पड़ा? भीष्म ने कहा — हे भारत, इस विषय में ऋषियों और देवताओं के बीच हुए एक पुराने संवाद का उल्लेख किया जाता है। एक बार देवताओं ने अनेक श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा कि यज्ञों में "अज" को बलि के रूप में अर्पित किया जाना चाहिए। उनके मत में "अज" शब्द का अर्थ बकरा था, और कोई अन्य प्राणी नहीं। ऋषियों ने कहा — वैदिक श्रुति यह घोषित करती है कि यज्ञों में वनस्पति के बीजों की आहुति दी जानी चाहिए। बीजों को ही "अज" कहा जाता है। अतः बकरों का वध करना उचित नहीं है। हे देवताओं, जिस धर्म में पशु-हिंसा का विधान हो, वह सज्जनों और धर्मात्माओं का धर्म नहीं हो सकता। यह कृतयुग है — इस धर्म के युग में पशुओं का वध कैसे सम्भव है? भीष्म ने आगे कहा — ऋषियों और देवताओं के बीच यह संवाद चल ही रहा था कि राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ वसु उस मार्ग से आते दिखाई दिए। वे महान् ऐश्वर्य से सम्पन्न थे और अपनी सेना, वाहनों तथा पशुओं के साथ आकाश-मार्ग से आ रहे थे। राजा वसु को आकाश से उस स्थान की ओर आते देखकर ब्राह्मणों ने देवताओं से कहा — यही हमारे संशय को दूर करेंगे। ये यज्ञ करते हैं, दान में उदार हैं और सदा सभी प्राणियों का कल्याण चाहते हैं। महान् वसु भला अन्यथा कैसे कहेंगे? इस प्रकार परस्पर वार्तालाप करके देवताओं और ऋषियों ने वसु की प्रतीक्षा की।

"Yudhishthira said,— 'When the great king Vasu was so wholly devoted to Narayana, for what reason then did he fall down from heaven and why again had he to sink beneath the surface of the Earth?" 'Bhishma said, — 'In this connection is cited an old narrative, O Bharata, of a discourse between the Rishis and the gods. The gods, once on a time, addressing many foremost of Brahmanas, said unto them that sacrifices should be performed by offering up Ajas as victims. By the word Aja should be understood the goat and no other animal.1 "The Rishis said, — The Vedic Sruti declares that in sacrifices the offerings should consist of (vegetable) seeds. Seeds are called Ajas. It behoveth you not to slay goats. Ye deities, that cannot be the religion of good and righteous people in which slaughter of animals is laid down. This, again, is the Krita age. How can animals be slaughtered in this epoch ot righteousness ? — ' "Bhishma continued, — While this discourse was going between the Rishis and the deities, that foremost of kings, viz., Vasu, was seen to come that way. Endued with great prosperity, the king was coming through the welkin, accompanied by his troops and vehicles and animals. Beholding king Vasu coming to that spot through the skies, the Brahma- nas addressing the deities, said,— This one will remove our doubts. He performs sacrifices. He is liberal in making gifts. He always seeks the good of all creatures. How, indeed, will the great Vasu speak otherwise. Having thus spoken unto each other, the deities and the Rishis
