वैशम्पायन ने कहा — (आगे) "और वे दोनों कौन हैं?" — तब ब्राह्मणों ने उत्तर दिया — "हमने सुना है कि वे दोनों नर और नारायण नामक तपस्वी हैं। उन्होंने मनुष्य-कुल में जन्म लिया है। हे राजन्, जाइए और उनसे युद्ध कीजिए। वही तेजस्वी नर और नारायण इस समय गन्धमादन पर्वत के किसी एकान्त प्रदेश में घोर तपस्या कर रहे हैं।" ब्राह्मणों के ये वचन सुनकर वह राजा शीघ्र ही छः प्रकार की सेना को एकत्र करके, उन अजेय तपस्वियों की कीर्ति को सहन न कर पाने के कारण, उस स्थान की ओर चल पड़ा जहाँ वे थे। वह गन्धमादन के उन विकट और भयावह पर्वतों पर जा पहुँचा। वहाँ उसने उन ऋषियों को खोजना आरम्भ किया और अन्त में उन्हें वन के भीतर एकान्त में पाया। उन दोनों श्रेष्ठ पुरुषों को भूख-प्यास से क्षीण, नसें उभरी हुई और दृश्यमान, तथा शीत वायु और सूर्य की तीव्र किरणों से अत्यन्त पीड़ित देखकर वह उनके समीप गया और उनके चरण स्पर्श करके उनका कुशल-क्षेम पूछा। दोनों ऋषियों ने उस राजा का स्वागत किया।
English Summary
Vaisampayana said, — (continued) And who are they ?'— And the Brahmanas answered him.saying,— 'It had been heard by us that those two persons are ascetics called Nara and Narayana. They have both taken their birth in the race of man. Go and fight with them, O king. It is that illustri- ous pair, Nara and Narayana, who are now practising the severest of penances in some hidden region of the mountains of Gandhamadana.' — Hearing those words of the Brahmanas, that king speedily mustered his large army consisting of six kinds of forces,1 and unable to bear their reputation, marched to the spot where those unvanquished ascetics were, and arrived at the rugged and frightful mountains of Gandhamadana. He began to search after those Rishia and at last, came upon them concealed within the woods. And beholding those two best of persons emaciated with hunger and thirst, their veins swollen and visible, and themselves much afflicted with cold winds, and the hot rays of the sun, he approached them, and touching their feet, enquired after their welfare.
