वह भयंकर अशनि, जो अत्यन्त दीप्तिमान थी, राक्षस के रथ को — उसके अश्वों, सारथियों और ध्वज सहित — भस्म करके पृथ्वी को भेदती हुई उसमें समा गई। द्रोणपुत्र के इस अद्भुत कर्म को — कि उसने कूदकर उस भयंकर दिव्यनिर्मित अशनि को थाम लिया — देखकर समस्त प्राणियों ने उसकी भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा की। तत्पश्चात्, हे राजन्, भीमसेन का पुत्र धृष्टद्युम्न के रथ की ओर बढ़ा और इन्द्र के महाधनुष के समान एक भयंकर धनुष उठाकर उसने द्रोण के यशस्वी पुत्र पर पुनः अनेक तीक्ष्ण बाण छोड़े। धृष्टद्युम्न ने भी निर्भयतापूर्वक अश्वत्थामा के वक्षस्थल पर अनेक श्रेष्ठ बाण चलाए, जो सुवर्णपंखयुक्त थे और विषधर सर्पों के समान घातक थे। तब द्रोणपुत्र ने सहस्रों बाण और लम्बे शर छोड़े। किन्तु घटोत्कच और धृष्टद्युम्न — इन दोनों वीरों ने अपने अग्निस्पर्श-सदृश बाणों से अश्वत्थामा के उन शरों को काट-काटकर निष्फल कर दिया। हे भरतकुलश्रेष्ठ, तत्पश्चात् घटोत्कच और द्रोणपुत्र के मध्य जो युद्ध हुआ, वह अत्यन्त भीषण था और उसने समस्त योद्धाओं के मन को प्रसन्न कर दिया।
English Summary
That formidable Asani, of dazzling effulgence, having reduced to ashes the Rakshasa's vehicle with steeds and drivers and standard, entered the earth, having pierced her through. Beholding that feat of Drona's son, viz., his having jumped down and seized that terrible Asani of celestial workmanship, all creatures applauded It. Proceeding then, O king, to Dhirshtadyumna's car, Bhimasena's son, taking up a terrible bow that resembled the large bow of Indra himself, once more shot many keen shafts at the illustrious son of Drona. Dhrishtadyumna also fearlessly shot at Aswatthaman's chest many foremost of shafts, equipped with wings of gold and resembling snakes of virulent poison. Then Drona's son shot arrows and long shafts by thousands. These two heroes, however, viz., Ghatotkacha and Dhrishta- dyumna, struck and baffled Aswatthaman's shafts by means of their own shafts whose touch resembled that of fire. The battle then that took place between those two lions among men (Ghatotkacha on the one side) and the son of Drona ( on the other ) became fierce in the extreme and gladdened all the combatants, O bull of Bharata's race !
