वासुदेव ने कहा — हे राजन्, शाल्व के बाणों से पीड़ित होकर जब प्रद्युम्न मूर्च्छित हो गए, तब युद्ध में आए हुए समस्त वृष्णि वीर निराश और शोकाकुल हो उठे। वृष्णि और अन्धक वंश के योद्धाओं के मुख से हाहाकार और आर्तनाद निकलने लगे, जबकि शत्रु पक्ष में महान हर्ष छा गया। प्रद्युम्न को इस प्रकार मूर्च्छित देखकर उनके कुशल सारथी, दारुक के पुत्र ने, अपने तीव्रगामी अश्वों की सहायता से उन्हें शीघ्र ही रणभूमि से दूर ले गए। रथ अधिक दूर नहीं गया था कि उन श्रेष्ठ योद्धा को चेतना लौट आई। उन्होंने धनुष उठाया और अपने सारथी से कहा — हे सूतपुत्र, तूने यह क्या किया? रणभूमि छोड़कर क्यों जा रहा है? युद्ध में वृष्णि वीरों की यह रीति नहीं है! हे सूतपुत्र, क्या उस भीषण संग्राम में शाल्व को देखकर तू भ्रमित हो गया? अथवा युद्ध का दृश्य देखकर तेरा मन विचलित हो गया? अपने मन की बात मुझे सच-सच बता। सारथी ने उत्तर दिया — हे जनार्दन-पुत्र, न मैं भ्रमित हुआ हूँ और न ही भय ने मुझे घेरा है। किन्तु हे केशव-पुत्र, मेरी दृष्टि में शाल्व को जीतना आपके लिए अत्यन्त कठिन है। इसीलिए हे वीर, मैं धीरे-धीरे रणभूमि से पीछे हट रहा हूँ। यह दुष्ट आपसे अधिक बलशाली है। जब रथी मूर्च्छित हो जाए, तो सारथी का यह कर्तव्य है कि वह उसकी रक्षा करे, चाहे वह कितना भी पराक्रमी क्यों न हो। हे दीर्घायु, जैसे आपका कर्तव्य है कि आप मेरी रक्षा करें, वैसे ही मेरा भी कर्तव्य है कि मैं सदा आपकी रक्षा करूँ। यही सोचकर कि रथी की सदा रक्षा होनी चाहिए, मैं आपको यहाँ से ले जा रहा हूँ।
English Summary
"Visudeva continued, 'O king, afflicted with the arrows of Salwa, when Pradyumna became senseless the Vrishnis who had come to the fight were all disheartened and filled with grief I And the combatant! of the Vrishni and Andhaka races burst inro exclamations of Oh \ and Alas I while great joy was felt by the enemy. And beholding him thus deprived of sense, his trained charioteer, the son of Daiuka, soon carried him off the field by the help of his fleet steeds. The car had not gone far when that best of warriors regained his senses, and taking up his bow addressed his charioteer, saying, 'O son of the Suta tribe, what hast thou done ? Why dost thou go leaving the field of battle ? This is not the custom of the Vrishni heroes in battle ! O son of a Suta, hast thou been bewildered at the sight of a Salwa in that fierce encounter ? Or hast thou been disheartened, beholding the fight ? O ! tell me truly thy mind 1* The charioteer answered, 'O son of Janardana, I have not been confounded, nor hath fear taken possession of me. On the other hand, O son of Kesava, the task, I ween, of vanquishing Salwa is diffi- cult for thee I Therefore, O hero, I am slowly retiring from the field. This wretch is stronger than thou art I It behoveth a charioteer to protect the warrior on the car, however brave, when he is deprived of his senses I O thou gifted with length of days, thou shouldst always be protected by me, even as It behoveth thee to protect me ! Thinking that the warrior on the car should always be protected (by his chario- teer), I am carrying thee away !
