कण्व ने कहा — इस प्रकार नारद के वचन सुनकर आर्यक ने अपने पौत्र को वर के रूप में चुना हुआ देखा और अपने पुत्र की मृत्यु का स्मरण करते हुए वह एक साथ हर्ष और शोक दोनों से भर गया। तब उसने नारद से कहा — हे देवर्षि, मैं गुणकेशी को पुत्रवधू के रूप में कैसे चाह सकता हूँ? हे महर्षि, ऐसा नहीं है कि आपके वचन मुझे अत्यन्त आदरणीय नहीं लगते, क्योंकि इन्द्र के मित्र के साथ सम्बन्ध की इच्छा कौन न करेगा? किन्तु हे महामुने, मैं इसलिए संकोच करता हूँ क्योंकि जो कारण इस सम्बन्ध को स्थायी नहीं रहने देगा, वह स्वयं ही अस्थिर है। हे महातेजस्वी, इस युवक के जनक, अर्थात् मेरे पुत्र को गरुड़ ने भक्षण कर लिया। उस कारण हम गहरे शोक में डूबे हैं। और इससे भी बड़ी विपदा यह है, हे प्रभु, कि विनता के पुत्र ने इन लोकों से जाते समय कहा था — एक मास के पश्चात् मैं इस सुमुख को भी खा जाऊँगा। जो उसने कहा है, वह अवश्य होगा, क्योंकि हम जानते हैं कि हमारा सामना किससे है। इसलिए सुपर्ण के उन वचनों से हम निराश और उदास हो गए हैं। कण्व ने आगे कहा — तब मातलि ने आर्यक से कहा — मेरे मन में एक विचार आया है। तुम्हारे इस पौत्र को मैंने अपने जामाता के रूप में चुना है। अतः यह नाग मेरे और नारद के साथ चलकर देवताओं के स्वामी के पास जाए।

"Kanwa continued — 'Thus addressed by Narada, Aryaka beholding his grandson elected as a bridegroom and remembering the death of his son was filled with delight and sorrow at the same time.' And he then addressed Narada and said, — ' How, O celestial Rishi, can I desire Gunakesi for a daughter-in-law ? It cannot be, O great Rishi, that thy words are not highly honoured by me, for who is there that would not desire an alliance with the friend of Indra ? I hesitate, however, O great Muni, in consequence of the instability of the very cause that would not make that alliance lasting.
