कृप ने कहा — रथियों में श्रेष्ठ द्रोण को अपना नेतृत्व सौंपकर हमने केवल पाञ्चालों के साथ युद्ध आरम्भ किया। जब संग्राम छिड़ा, तो कुरु और सोमक एक-दूसरे में घुल-मिल गए, परस्पर गर्जना करते हुए अपने-अपने शस्त्रों से एक-दूसरे को धराशायी करने लगे। उस युद्ध के चलते धार्तराष्ट्रों की सेना क्षीण होने लगी। यह देखकर तुम्हारे पिता क्रोध से भर उठे और उन्होंने एक दिव्य अस्त्र का आह्वान किया। मनुष्यों में वृषभ के समान द्रोण ने ब्रह्मास्त्र का आह्वान करके शत्रुओं को चौड़े फलवाले बाणों से सैकड़ों और हजारों की संख्या में मार गिराया। विधि के विधान से प्रेरित होकर पाण्डव, कैकेय, मत्स्य और पाञ्चाल — हे द्विजश्रेष्ठ — द्रोण के रथ के निकट आते हुए नष्ट होने लगे। द्रोण ने अपने ब्रह्मास्त्र से एक सहस्र वीर योद्धाओं और दो सहस्र हाथियों को यमलोक पहुँचा दिया। श्यामवर्ण, कानों तक लटकती श्वेत जटाओं वाले, पूरे पचासी वर्ष की आयु के वृद्ध द्रोण रणभूमि में सोलह वर्ष के युवक की भाँति विचरण करते थे। जब शत्रु-सेना इस प्रकार पीड़ित होने लगी और राजागण मारे जाने लगे, तब प्रतिशोध की प्रबल इच्छा रखते हुए भी पाञ्चाल युद्ध से पीछे हट गए। जब शत्रु पीछे हटने से उनकी व्यूह-रचना आंशिक रूप से भंग हो गई, तब शत्रुओं को जीतने वाले द्रोण ने दिव्यास्त्रों का आह्वान करते हुए उदित सूर्य के समान दीप्तिमान होकर रणभूमि में शोभायमान हुए। तुम्हारे वीर पिता पाण्डव-सेना के मध्य में प्रवेश करके, बाणों को अपनी किरणें बनाते हुए, मध्याह्न के सूर्य के समान प्रतीत होते थे, जिनकी ओर कोई दृष्टि उठाने में भी असमर्थ था। द्रोण के बाणों से प्रज्वलित सूर्य की भाँति दग्ध होकर वे सब निरुत्साहित हो गए, उनकी शक्ति और चेतना क्षीण हो गई। द्रोण के बाणों से उन्हें इस प्रकार पीड़ित देखकर, विजय की अभिलाषा से मधुसूदन ने दिव्यास्त्र मन्त्रों के द्वारा आह्वान किए जाते थे। ये ऐसी शक्तियाँ थीं जो आह्वान करने वाले की इच्छा के अनुसार विविध प्रकार के मूर्त अस्त्र-शस्त्र उत्पन्न करती थीं। यहाँ ब्रह्मास्त्र ने चौड़े फलक वाले बाणों का रूप धारण किया।

"Kripa said, 'Placing Drona, that foremost of car-warriors, at ou% head, we commenced to fight with only the Panchalas. When the battle commenced, the Kurus and the Somakas, mingled together, roared at one another and began to strike down one another with their weapons. During the progress of that battle the Dhartarashtras began to be thinned. Seeing this, thy sire, .filled with rage, invoked into existence a celestial weapon. Indeed, Drona, that bull among men, having invoked the Brahma weapon, slew his enemies with broad-headed arrows, by hundreds, and thousands.1 Urged by fate, the Pandavas, the Kaikeyas, the Matsyas, and the Panchalas, 0 foremost of regenerate ones, approaching Drona's car, began to perish. With his Brahma weapon, Drona despatched unto Yama's abode a thousand brave warriors and two thousand elephants. Of a dark complexion, with his gray locks hanging down to his ears, and full five and eighty years old, the aged Drona used to career in battle like a youth of sixteen. When the enemy's troops were thus afflicted and the kings were being slain, the Panchalas, though filled with desire of revenge, turned back from the fight. When the enemy, turning back, partially lost their order, that vanquisher of foes, (viz., Drona), invoking celestial weapons into existence, shone resplendent like the risen sun. Indeed, thy valiant sire, getting into the midst of the Pandavas, and having arrows for the rays that emanated from him, resembled the midday sun at whom none could gaze. Scorched by Drona, as if by the blazing sun, they became cheerless and deprived of their energy and senses.
