सञ्जय ने कहा — हे भारत, बुद्धिमान युधिष्ठिर के ये वचन सुनकर सुभद्रा के पुत्र ने अपने सारथी को द्रोण की व्यूह-रचना की ओर बढ़ने का आदेश दिया। जब उसने "आगे बढ़ो, आगे बढ़ो" कहकर सारथी को प्रेरित किया, तब सारथी ने अभिमन्यु से, हे राजन्, इस प्रकार कहा — "हे चिरञ्जीव, पाण्डवों ने तुम्हारे ऊपर बड़ा भारी भार रखा है। पहले अपने विवेक से यह निश्चय करो कि तुम इसे वहन करने में समर्थ हो या नहीं, तभी युद्ध में प्रवृत्त होओ। आचार्य द्रोण श्रेष्ठ अस्त्रों के ज्ञाता और युद्ध-कला में निपुण हैं। तुम तो बड़े लाड़-प्यार में पले हो और युद्ध के अभ्यस्त नहीं हो।" ये वचन सुनकर अभिमन्यु ने हँसते हुए अपने सारथी से कहा — "हे सारथे, यह द्रोण कौन है? और यह क्षत्रियों का विशाल समूह क्या है? स्वयं इन्द्र भी अपने ऐरावत पर आरूढ़ होकर और समस्त देवताओं की सहायता लेकर यदि युद्ध में आएँ, तो भी मैं उनका सामना करूँगा। आज इन समस्त क्षत्रियों के विषय में मुझे तनिक भी चिन्ता नहीं है। यह शत्रु-सेना तो मेरे सोलहवें अंश के भी बराबर नहीं है। हे सूतपुत्र,
English Summary
"Sanjaya said, 'Hearing these words of the intelligent Yudhishthira, the son of Subhadra, O Bharata, urged his charioteer towards Drona's array. The charioteer, urged by him with the words, 'Proceed, Proceed', replied unto Abhimanyu, O king, in these words, 'O thou that art blest with length of days, heavy is the burthen that hath been placed upon thee by the Pandavas ! Ascertaining by thy judgment as to whether thou art able to bear It or not, thou shouldst then engage in battle. The preceptor Drona is a master of superior weapons and accomplished ( in battle ). Thou, however, hast been brought up in great luxury and art unused to battle.' "Hearing these words, Abhimanyu replied unto his charioteer, saying with a laugh, 'O charioteer, who is this Drona ? What, again, is this vast assemblage of Kshatriyas ? Sakra himself on his Airavata and aided by all the celestials, I would encounter in battle. I do not feel the slightest anxiety about all these Kshatriyas today. This hostile army doth not come up to even a sixteen part of myself.
