मैंने सुना कि तत्पश्चात् तुम कर्ण के सामने पड़े। हे अचिन्त्य पराक्रमी, मैंने सोचा कि तुम उस क्रूर कर्ण से बचकर शिविर में विश्राम कर रहे होगे। हे पाण्डुपुत्र, मैंने युद्ध के अग्रभाग में कर्ण के उस महान् और अद्भुत भार्गव अस्त्र का प्रदर्शन देखा है। अब श्रृञ्जयों में कोई भी ऐसा योद्धा नहीं है जो उस महाबली रथी कर्ण का सामना कर सके। हे राजन्, शिनि के पौत्र सात्यकि और धृष्टद्युम्न मेरे रथ के पहियों की रक्षा करें। वीर राजकुमार युधामन्यु और उत्तमौजस् मेरी पीठ की रक्षा करें। हे महायशस्वी, उस शत्रु-सेना में स्थित वीर और अजेय रथी सूतपुत्र का सामना करते हुए — जैसे शक्र ने वृत्र का सामना किया था — हे राजश्रेष्ठ, हे भारत, यदि आज इस युद्ध में कर्ण मिले तो मैं उससे युद्ध करूँगा। आओ और देखो — मैं और सूतपुत्र विजय के लिए एक-दूसरे से कैसे संग्राम करते हैं। देखो, प्रभद्रक वीर एक महाबली वृषभ के सम्मुख दौड़ रहे हैं। हे भारत, वहाँ छः सहस्र राजकुमार आज स्वर्ग की कामना से युद्ध में अपना बलिदान दे रहे हैं। हे राजन्, यदि आज मैं अपनी पूर्ण शक्ति लगाकर युद्धरत कर्ण को उसके सभी सम्बन्धियों सहित नहीं मार सका, तो हे नरसिंह, वही दुर्गति मेरी होगी जो उस व्यक्ति की होती है जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी नहीं करता।
English Summary
I heard that after that thou wert seen by Karna. O thou of in- conceivable feats, I thought that thou must have, O king, been enjoying rest (in the camp), having come away from the cruel Karna. I have seen, O son of Pandu, the great and wonderful (Bhargava) weapon of Karna displayed in the van of battle. There is now no other warrior among the Srinjayas that is able to resist the mighty car-warrior Karna. Let Sini's grandson Satyaki, and Dhrishtadyumna, O king, be the protectors of my car-wheels. Let the heroic princes Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas protect my rear. O thou of great glory* encountering that heroic and invincible car-warrior, viz., the Suta's son, staying in the hostile army, like Sakra encountering Vritra, O foremost of kings, I will, O Bharata, fight with the Suta's son if he can be found in this battle today. Come and behold me and the Suta's son contending with each other in battle for victory. There, the Prabhadrakas are rushing towards the face of a mighty bull. There, O Bharata, six thousand princes are sacrificing themselves in battle today, for the sake of heaven. If, putting forth my strength, I do not, O king, slay Kama today with all his relatives while engaged in battle with him, then that end will be mine, O lion among kings, which is his that does not accomplish a vow taken
