उस भयंकर युद्ध में कर्ण को पाञ्चालों का संहार करते देख, धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर क्रोध में भरकर उसकी ओर बढ़े। हे तात, धृष्टद्युम्न और द्रौपदी के पुत्र भी, तथा सैकड़ों वीर योद्धा उस शत्रुघाती राधापुत्र को चारों ओर से घेर कर खड़े हो गए। शिखण्डी, सहदेव, नकुल, नकुल के पुत्र, जनमेजय, शिनि के पौत्र, और असंख्य प्रभद्रक — ये सभी अपार तेज से सम्पन्न वीर, धृष्टद्युम्न को अग्रणी बनाकर आगे बढ़े और बाणों तथा अनेक प्रकार के अस्त्रों से कर्ण पर प्रहार करते हुए अत्यन्त शोभायमान दिखे। जैसे गरुड़ असंख्य सर्पों पर झपटता है, वैसे ही अधिरथ के पुत्र ने अकेले उन समस्त चेदि, पाञ्चाल और पाण्डव वीरों पर उस संग्राम में आक्रमण किया। हे राजन्, उन सबके और कर्ण के बीच जो युद्ध हुआ, वह अत्यन्त भीषण था — जैसे पुराने काल में देवताओं और दानवों के बीच हुआ था। जैसे सूर्य चारों ओर के अन्धकार को दूर कर देता है, वैसे ही कर्ण ने निर्भय होकर अकेले उन सभी महान धनुर्धरों का सामना किया, जो एकजुट होकर उस पर बाणों की अनवरत वर्षा कर रहे थे। जब राधापुत्र इस प्रकार पाण्डवों में व्यस्त था, तब भीमसेन क्रोध से भरकर कौरवों का संहार करने लगे — उनके प्रत्येक बाण यमराज के दूत के समान भयंकर थे। वे महान धनुर्धर अकेले ही वाह्लीकों, कैकयों, मत्स्यों, वसातों, मद्रों और सैन्धवों से युद्ध करते हुए अत्यन्त तेजस्वी दिख रहे थे। वहाँ भीम के बाणों से महत्त्वपूर्ण अंगों में आहत हाथी, अपने सवारों सहित धराशायी हो गए और उनके गिरने के वेग से पृथ्वी काँप उठी। अश्वारोहियों के मारे जाने पर घोड़े और प्राणहीन पैदल सैनिक, बाणों से बिंधे हुए और मुख से रक्त की धाराएँ उगलते हुए भूमि पर गिर पड़े। सहस्रों रथी भी हाथों से शस्त्र छूट जाने पर रणभूमि में ढेर हो गए।
English Summary
"Beholding Kama thus slaughtering the Panchalas in that dread- ful battle, King Yudhishthira the just, rushed in wrath towards him, Dhrishtadyumna and the sons of Draupadi also, O sire, and hundreds of warriors, encompassed that slayer of foes viz., the son of Radha. And Sikhandin, and Sahadeva, and Nakula, and Nakula's son, and Janame- jaya, and the grandson of Sini, and innumerable Prabhadrakas, all endued with immeasurable energy, — advancing with Dhrishtadyumna in their van, looked magnificent as they struck Kama with shafts and diverse weapons. Like Garuda falling upon a large number of snakes, the son of Adhiratha, single-handed, fell upon all those Chedis and Pan- chalas and Pandavas in that encounter. The battle that took place between them and Kama, O monarch, became exceedingly fierce like that which had occurred in days of old between the gods and the Danavas. Like the Sun dispelling the surrounding darkness, Kama fearlessly and alone encountered all those great bowmen united together and pouring upon him repeated showers of arrows. While the son of Radha was thus engaged with the Pandavas, Bhimasena, filled with rage, began to slaughter the Kurus with shafts, everyone of which resembled the lord of Yama. That great bowman, fighting single-handed with the Valhikas, and the Kaikayas, the Matsyas, the Vasatas, the Madras, and Saindhavas, looked exceedingly resplendent. There, elephants, assailed in their v ital limbs by Bhima with his clothyard shafts fell down, with their riders slain, making the Earth tremble with the v iolence of their fall. Steeds also, with their riders slain, and foot-soldiers deprived of life, lay down, pierced with arrows and vomiting blood in large quanti- ties. Car-warriors in thousands fell down, their weapons loosened from their hands.
