इसी बीच, महाबली कर्ण ने सात्यकि को परास्त कर, कुरु राजा की रक्षा की इच्छा से, द्रोण के वधकर्ता उस तीव्र बाणधारी वीर के सम्मुख सीधे प्रस्थान किया। किन्तु शिनि के पौत्र ने तत्काल उसका पीछा किया और अपने बाणों से उसे पीछे से आघात करने लगे — जैसे कोई हाथी अपने प्रतिद्वन्द्वी का पीछा करते हुए उसके पिछले अंगों पर अपने दाँतों से प्रहार करता है। तब, हे भारत, कर्ण और पृषत के पुत्र के बीच के उस रणक्षेत्र में दोनों सेनाओं के महान् आत्मा वीरों के मध्य घोर युद्ध छिड़ गया। पाण्डवों में से और हमारे पक्ष में से एक भी योद्धा उस संग्राम से मुख नहीं मोड़ा।
