हमने अपने शत्रु के प्रति जो ऋण था, वह चुका दिया है। अब लोग बातें करते हुए भी हमारी निन्दा नहीं कर सकेंगे। द्रोण-पुत्र को परास्त करके हमने उसे ब्राह्मण होने के कारण और अपने दिवंगत गुरु के प्रति सम्मान की भावना से मुक्त कर दिया। हे देवि, उसकी कीर्ति नष्ट हो चुकी है, केवल उसका शरीर शेष है। उससे उसकी मणि छीन ली गई है और पृथ्वी पर वह अपने अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से भी वंचित हो गया है। द्रौपदी ने कहा — मेरी इच्छा केवल इतनी थी कि हमने जो आघात सहा, उसका ऋण चुका दें। गुरु-पुत्र मेरे लिए गुरु के समान ही वन्दनीय है। हे भारत, महाराज इस मणि को अपने मस्तक पर धारण करें। तब राजा ने द्रौपदी की इच्छा का सम्मान करते हुए और उसे गुरु का प्रसाद मानते हुए वह मणि लेकर अपने मस्तक पर धारण कर ली। उस श्रेष्ठ और दिव्य मणि को मस्तक पर धारण किए हुए वह पराक्रमी राजा ऐसे सुशोभित हो रहे थे, जैसे चन्द्रमा से मण्डित कोई पर्वत। अपने पुत्रों की मृत्यु के शोक से पीड़ित होने पर भी महान् मनोबल से सम्पन्न राजकुमारी द्रौपदी ने अपना प्रण त्याग दिया। तत्पश्चात् राजा युधिष्ठिर ने महाबाहु कृष्ण से ये वचन कहे।

have paid off the debt we owed to our enemy. People, while talking, will not be able to censure us any longer. Having vanquished Drona's son, we have set him free for the sake of his being a Brahmana and of the respect that should be shown to our deceased preceptor. His fame hath been destroyed, O goddess, only his body remains ! He has been divested of his gem and on earth he has been reft of his weapons P "Draupadi said, 1 desired to only pay off our debt for the injury we have sustained. The preceptor's son is worthy of my reverence as the preceptor himself. Let the king bind this gem on his head, O Bharata !' The king then, taking that gem, placed It on his head, at the desire of Draupadi and regarding It as a gift from the preceptor. Holding on his head that excellent and celestial gem, the puissant king looked beautiful like a mountain with the moon above It. Though stricken with grief on account of the death of her sons, the princess Draupadi, possessed of great mental strength, gave up her vow. Then king Yudhishthira enquired of the mighty-armed Krishna, saying the following words.' "
