स्वयं को सीधा रखना चाहिए और कभी झुकना नहीं चाहिए, क्योंकि पुरुषार्थ ही मनुष्यता है। गाँठों पर टूट जाना उचित है, किन्तु झुकना नहीं। मेरे जैसे व्यक्ति को केवल धर्म के निमित्त ब्राह्मणों के सामने ही शीश नमाना चाहिए, अन्य किसी के सामने नहीं। अन्य सभी के विषय में जब तक जीवन है, मातंग के वचन के अनुसार ही आचरण करना चाहिए। यही क्षत्रियों का धर्म है और यही सदा मेरा मत रहा है। हे केशव, मेरे पिता ने जो राज्य का भाग उन्हें दिया था, वह जब तक मैं जीवित हूँ, उन्हें पुनः प्राप्त नहीं होगा। हे जनार्दन, जब तक राजा धृतराष्ट्र जीवित हैं, तब तक हम दोनों पक्षों को अपने शस्त्र म्यान में रखकर उन्हीं के आश्रय में रहना चाहिए। हे माधव, बाल्यकाल में जब मैं दूसरों पर आश्रित था, तब अज्ञान अथवा भय के कारण जो राज्य दे दिया गया था, वह अब पुनः देने योग्य नहीं है। हे वृष्णिकुलनन्दन, वह राज्य पाण्डवों को प्राप्त नहीं होगा। हे महाबाहु केशव, जब तक मैं जीवित हूँ, तब तक तीखी सुई की नोक से ढकी जितनी भूमि हो, उतनी भी हम पाण्डवों को नहीं देंगे।
English Summary
himself erect, and never bow down, for exertion alone is manliness ; one should rather break at the knots than bend. A person like me should only bow down to the Brahmanas for the sake of piety, without regarding anybody else. (As regards persons other than Brahmanas), one should, as long as one lives, act according to Matanga's saying. Even this is the duty of Kshatriyas ; even this is ever my opinion. That share in the kingdom which was formerly given them by my father shall never again, O Kesava, be obtainable by them as long as I live. As long, O Janarddana, as king Dhritarashtra liveth, both ourselves and they, sheathing our weapons. O Madhava, should live in dependency on him. Given away formerly from ignorance or fear, when I was a child and dependent on others, the kingdom, O Janarddana, incapable of being given away again, shall not, O delighter of Vrishni's race, be obtainable by the Pandavas. At present, O Kesava of mighty arms, as long as I live, even that much of our land which may be covered by the point of a sharp needle shall not, O Madhava, be given by us unto the Pandavas.'
