यदि उसने मेरे वचन स्वीकार कर लिए होते, तो कुरुओं का कल्याण भी होता और धर्म की भी रक्षा होती। हे राजश्रेष्ठ, यदि उसने मेरी वे कोमल सलाहें — जो औषधि के समान थीं — अस्वीकार कर दी होतीं, तो हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, मैं उसे बलपूर्वक विवश कर देता। और यदि उसके दरबार में बैठे वे लोग, जो मित्र का वेश धारण किए हुए वास्तव में उसके शत्रु थे, उसका पक्ष लेते, तो मैं उन सभी को और वहाँ उपस्थित उन जुआरियों को भी मार डालता। हे कौरव्य, उस समय मेरा अनार्त देश में न होना ही इसका कारण है कि तुम इस पासों से उत्पन्न घोर संकट में पड़ गए। हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ, हे पाण्डुपुत्र, द्वारका पहुँचने पर युयुधान से तुम्हारी इस विपत्ति का सारा वृत्तान्त मुझे ज्ञात हुआ। हे राजश्रेष्ठ, यह सुनते ही मेरा हृदय शोक से व्याकुल हो उठा और मैं तुम्हारे दर्शन की अभिलाषा लेकर शीघ्र ही यहाँ चला आया। हे भरतवंश के वृषभ, तुम सब इस भयंकर संकट में पड़ गए हो — यह देखकर मेरा हृदय व्यथित है। मैं तुम्हें और तुम्हारे भाइयों को इस दुर्भाग्य में डूबा हुआ देख रहा हूँ।
English Summary
If he had accepted my words thus addressed, the welfare of the Kurus as also Virtue itself would both have been secured ! And, O foremost of kings, if he had rejected my gentle counsels offered as medicine, then, O best of the Bharata race, I would have compelled him by force ! And if those who wait at his court, professing to be his friends but in reality his foes, had supported him, then I would have slain them all,*along with those gamblers, there present ! O Kauravya, It is owing tD my absence from the Anartta country at that time that thou hast fallen into such distress begot of dice ! O thou best of Kurus, O son of Pandu, on arriving at Dwaraka I learnt from Yuyudhana all about thy calamity ! And, O foremost of kings, directly I heard It with a heart sore agitated by grief, have I speedily come here wishing to see thee, O king ! Alas ! O bull of the Bharata race, ye have all fallen ^into dire distress ! I see thee with thy brothers plunged in misfortune f "
