भीम को बचाने के लिए माद्री और पाण्डु के दोनों पुत्र तथा युयुधान के नेतृत्व में अन्य वीर योद्धा शीघ्रता से भीमसेन की ओर बढ़े। वे नरश्रेष्ठ वीर क्रोध से भरकर एकजुट हो गए और द्रोण की सेना को तोड़ने के लिए आगे बढ़े, जिसकी रक्षा अनेक श्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर कर रहे थे। भीम आदि वे महान रथी और महाबली योद्धा द्रोण की सेना पर प्रचण्ड वेग से टूट पड़े। किन्तु रथियों में श्रेष्ठ द्रोण ने उन सभी महारथियों को — जो बल में महान और युद्ध में निपुण थे — बिना किसी विचलन के स्वीकार किया। तुम्हारी सेना के योद्धाओं ने अपने राज्य की चिन्ता छोड़कर और मृत्यु का भय त्यागकर पाण्डवों के विरुद्ध प्रस्थान किया। अश्वारोही अश्वारोहियों से भिड़े और रथी रथियों से। शक्तियों के सामने शक्तियाँ, तलवारों के सामने तलवारें और कुल्हाड़ियों के सामने कुल्हाड़ियाँ चलने लगीं। तलवारों का भीषण संग्राम हुआ जिसमें भयंकर संहार हुआ। हाथियों के हाथियों से टकराने के कारण युद्ध और भी उग्र हो उठा। कुछ योद्धा हाथियों की पीठ से सिर के बल गिरे और कुछ घोड़ों से। हे तात, अन्य योद्धा बाणों से बिंधकर रथों से गिर पड़े। उस भीषण संग्राम में जब कोई कवचहीन होकर गिरता, तो कोई हाथी उसकी छाती पर चढ़कर उसका मस्तक कुचल देता। कहीं हाथी भूमि पर गिरे हुए अनेक योद्धाओं को रौंदते दिखाई देते। अनेक हाथी गिरते समय अपने दाँतों से धरती को विदीर्ण करते हुए बड़े-बड़े समूहों को चीर डालते। कई हाथी सूँड़ में बाण गड़े होने पर भी रणभूमि में विचरते रहे और सैकड़ों मनुष्यों को रौंदते और कुचलते रहे। कुछ हाथी काले लोहे के कवच से सुसज्जित गिरे हुए योद्धाओं, घोड़ों और हाथियों को इस प्रकार भूमि में दबाते दिखे, मानो वे सब केवल घास-फूस के ढेर हों।
English Summary
rescue Bhiraa. Those heroes of immeasurable energy, viz., the two sons of Madri and Pandu, and others headed by Yuyudhana, quickly pro- ceeded to Bhimasena's side. And those bulls among men, filled with rage and uniting together, advanced to battle, desirous of breaking the army of Drona that was protected by many foremost of bowmen. Indeed, those great car-warriors of mighty energy, viz., Bhima and others, fell furiously upon Drona's host. Drona, however, that foremost of car- warriors, received without any anxiety, all those mighty car- warriors, of great strength, — those heroes accomplished in battle. Dis- regarding their kingdoms and casting off all fear of death, the warriors of thy army proceeded against the Pandavas. Horsemen encountered horsemen, and car-warriors encountered car-warriors. The battle proceeded, darts against darts, swords against swords, axes against axes. A fierce encounter with swords took place, producing a terrible car- nage. And in consequence of the collision of elephants against elephants the battle became furious. Some fell down from the backs of elephants, and some from the backs of steeds, with heads downwards. And others, O sire, fell down from cars, pierced with arrows. In that fierce press, as some one fell down deprived of armour, an elephant might be seen attacking him in the chest and crushing his head. Elsewhere might be seen elephants crushing numbers of men fallen down on the field. And many elephants, piercing the earth with their tusks (as they fell down), were seen to tear therewith large bodies of men. Many elephants, again, with arrows sticking to their trunks, wandered over the field, tearing and crushing men by hundreds. And some elephants were seen pressing down into the earth fallen warriors and steeds and elephants cased in armour of black iron, as if these were only thick reeds.
