और शत्रु-नगरों को जीतने वाले शाल्व ने क्रोध से उन्मत्त होकर अपने उस सुन्दर और अप्रतिम वेगशाली रथ से उतरकर प्रद्युम्न का सामना करने का निश्चय किया। लोगों ने शाल्व और वृष्णि-वीरों में श्रेष्ठ प्रद्युम्न के बीच उस युद्ध को देखा, जो वासव और वलि के संग्राम के समान था। हे वीर, सुवर्ण से अलंकृत, ध्वजाओं और ध्वजदण्डों तथा तूणीरों से सुसज्जित अपने सुन्दर रथ पर आरूढ़ होकर, तेजस्वी और महाबली शाल्व ने प्रद्युम्न पर बाणों की वर्षा आरम्भ कर दी। प्रद्युम्न ने भी अपनी भुजाओं के बल से बाणों की घनी वर्षा करके शाल्व को युद्ध में आच्छादित कर दिया। किन्तु सौभ का राजा शाल्व, प्रद्युम्न के इस आक्रमण को सहन न कर सका और उसने मेरे पुत्र पर प्रज्वलित अग्नि के समान बाण छोड़े। परन्तु महाबली प्रद्युम्न ने उस बाण-वर्षा को रोक दिया। यह देखकर शाल्व ने मेरे पुत्र पर दीप्तिमान अस्त्रों की वर्षा की। तब, हे नरेश्वरों में अग्रगण्य, शाल्व के बाणों से आहत होकर रुक्मिणी-पुत्र ने बिना विलम्ब किये एक ऐसा बाण छोड़ा जो समर्थ था।

And that conqueror of hostile cities, Salwa, maddened by anger, descended from his beautiful car of unchecked speed, resolv ed to encounter Pradyumna* And the people beheld the fight between Salwa and the foremost of Vrishni heroes, which was even like unto the encounter between Vasava with Vali. And, O hero, mounting on his beautiful car decked with gold and furnished with flags and flagstaffs and quivers, the illustrious and mighty Salwa began to discharge his arrows at Pra- dyumna ! Pradyumna also by the energy of his arms, overwhelmed Salwa in the combat by a thick shower of arrows. The king of Saubha, however, thus attacked in battle by Pradyumna, endured him not, but discharged at my son arrows that were like blazing fire. But the mighty Prodyumna parried off that arrowy shower. Beholding this, Salwa rained on my son other weapons of blazing splendour.
