और वह वीर भीमसेन, वक्षस्थल पर उस बाण को धारण किए हुए, हे राजश्रेष्ठ, उसी प्रकार शोभायमान हो रहे थे जैसे पुराने काल में स्कन्द के शक्ति-प्रहार से क्रौञ्च पर्वत शोभित हुआ था। वे दोनों नरश्रेष्ठ युद्ध में क्रोध से भरकर एक-दूसरे पर ऐसे बाण चला रहे थे जो शस्त्रकारों द्वारा भली-भाँति पालिश किए गए और सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी थे। भीम, भीष्म की मृत्यु की अभिलाषा लिए, सोमदत्त के बलशाली पुत्र से युद्ध कर रहे थे, और वह पुत्र भीष्म की विजय की कामना से भीम से लड़ रहा था — दोनों एक-दूसरे के पराक्रम को निष्फल करने का सावधानी से प्रयत्न कर रहे थे। भरद्वाज-पुत्र द्रोण ने कुन्ती-पुत्र युधिष्ठिर को रोका, जो विशाल सेना के साथ भीष्म की ओर बढ़े आ रहे थे। हे राजन्, द्रोण के रथ की वह गड़गड़ाहट जो मेघों की गर्जना के समान थी, उसे सुनकर प्रभद्रक वीर काँप उठे। पाण्डु-पुत्र की वह विशाल सेना, युद्ध में द्रोण द्वारा रोके जाने पर, पूरे बल से प्रयत्न करने पर भी एक पग भी आगे न बढ़ सकी। हे राजन्, आपके पुत्र चित्रसेन ने क्रोधमुखी चेकितान को रोका, जो भीष्म पर आक्रमण करने के लिए पूरे वेग से बढ़ रहे थे। महान पराक्रम और अद्भुत हस्तलाघव से सम्पन्न उस महारथी ने भीष्म के निमित्त चेकितान से अपनी पूर्ण शक्ति के अनुसार युद्ध किया, हे भारत। और चेकितान ने भी चित्रसेन से युद्ध किया।

And the valiant Bhimasena, with that arrow on his chest, looked beautiful, O best of kings, like the Krauncha mountain in days of old with the dart of Skanda. And those two bulls among men, enraged in battle, shot at each other shafts brightly polished by their forgers and endued with effulgence of the Sun. Bhima, longing for Bhishma's death, fought with the mighty son of Somadatta, and the latter, desirous of Bhishma's victory, fought with the former, each carefully seeking to counteract the other's feats. Bharadwaja's son resisted Yudhishthira the son of Kunti, who, accompanied by a large force, was coming towards Bhishma. Hearing the rattle of Drona's car, O king, that resembled the roar of the clouds, the Prabhadrakas, O sire, began to tremble. That large force, of Pandu's son, resisted by Drona in battle, could not, exerting vigorously, advance even one step. Thy son Chitrasena, O king, resisted Chekitana of wrathful visage who was exerting vigorously for coming upon Bhishma. Possessed of great prowess and great dexterity of hand, that mighty car-warrior for the sake of Bhishma, battled with Chekitana, O Bharata, according to the utmost of his power.
