गान्धारी ने कहा — हे दुर्योधन, हे प्रिय पुत्र, मेरे इन वचनों को ध्यान से सुनो जो तुम्हारे और तुम्हारे सभी अनुयायियों के हित में हैं — ऐसे वचन जिनका पालन करना तुम्हारे लिए सम्भव है और जो तुम्हें सुख प्रदान करेंगे। हे दुर्योधन, अपने शुभचिन्तकों के वचन मानो — वे वचन जो भरतश्रेष्ठ तुम्हारे पिता ने, और भीष्म ने, और द्रोण ने, और कृप ने, और क्षत्री ने कहे हैं। यदि तुम सन्धि करो, तो इससे भीष्म का, तुम्हारे पिता का, मेरा, और द्रोण के नेतृत्व में तुम्हारे सभी शुभचिन्तकों का सम्मान होगा। हे महाबुद्धिमान, हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, केवल अपनी इच्छा से कोई भी राज्य प्राप्त करने, उसे बनाए रखने और उसका उपभोग करने में सफल नहीं होता। जिसने अपनी इन्द्रियों को वश में नहीं किया, वह अधिक काल तक राज्य का सुख नहीं भोग सकता। जिसने अपनी आत्मा को वश में किया हो और जो महान बुद्धि से सम्पन्न हो, वही राज्य का संचालन कर सकता है। काम और क्रोध मनुष्य को उसकी सम्पत्ति और भोग से दूर कर देते हैं। इन शत्रुओं को पहले जीतकर ही राजा पृथ्वी को अपने अधीन करता है। मनुष्यों पर सार्वभौम सत्ता एक महान वस्तु है। दुष्ट आत्मा वाले लोग सहज ही राज्य पाने की अभिलाषा कर सकते हैं, किन्तु वे राज्य मिलने पर उसे बनाए रखने में समर्थ नहीं होते। जो विस्तृत साम्राज्य पाने की इच्छा रखता है, उसे अपनी इन्द्रियों को अर्थ और धर्म दोनों से बाँधना चाहिए, क्योंकि इन्द्रियों के संयम से बुद्धि उसी प्रकार बढ़ती है जैसे ईंधन मिलने पर अग्नि बढ़ती है। यदि इन्द्रियाँ वश में न हों, तो वे अपने स्वामी का नाश कर देती हैं — जैसे अनियन्त्रित और उद्दण्ड घोड़े अकुशल सारथी को मार डालते हैं। जो पहले स्वयं को जीते बिना अपने मन्त्रियों को जीतना चाहता है, और मन्त्रियों को जीते बिना शत्रुओं को जीतना चाहता है, वह शीघ्र ही स्वयं पराजित होकर नष्ट हो जाता है।
English Summary
"Gandhari said, — 'O Duryodhana, attend, O dear son, to these words of mine that are beneficial to thee as also to all thy followers, — words that thou art competent to obey and that will conduce to thy happiness. O Duryodhana, obey thou the words of thy well-wishers, those words, viz, which that best of the Bharatas— thy father— and Bhishma, and Drona, and Kripa, and Kshattri, have spoken. If thou makest peace, thou wouldst by that render homage to Bhishma, to thy father, to me, and to alt thy well-wishers with Drona at their head. O thou of great wisdom, nobody, O best of the Bharatas, succeedeth by his own desire alone in acquiring and keeping or enjoying a kingdom. One that hath not his senses under control, cannot enjoy sovereignty for any length of time. He that hath his soul under control and is endued with great intelligence, can rule a kingdom. Lust and wrath wean away a man from his possessions and enjoyments. Conquering these foes first, a king bringeth the earth under his subjection. Sovereignty over men is a great thing. Those that are of wicked souls may easily desire to win a kingdom, but they are not competent to retain a kingdom (when won). He that desireth to obtain extensive empire must bind his senses to both profit and virtue, for if the senses are restrained, intelligence increased], like fire that increaseth when fed with fuel. If not controlled, these can even slay their possessor, like unbroken and furious horses, capable of killing an unskilful driver. One that seeketh to conquer his counsellors without conquering his own self, and to conquer foes without conquer- ing his counsellors^ is soon vanquished himself and is ruined.
