यही इसके लक्षण हैं। इसी के द्वारा मैं सत्य का भलीभाँति विवेक करता हूँ। इसीलिए यह मेरी बुद्धि का स्रोत है। फिर भी इसे अपना न मानते हुए और इससे असंग रहते हुए मैं विचरण करता हूँ। यह शरीर एक वृक्ष के समान है। इसके लिए मनुष्य पत्नी, पुत्र, धन, दास, घर और सम्बन्धियों को एकत्र करता है और बड़े कष्ट से धन अर्जित करके उनका पालन-पोषण करता है। इस प्रकार वह अपने अगले जन्म के बीज बोते हुए स्वयं को नष्ट कर लेता है। जैसे अनेक स्त्रियाँ एक गृहस्थ को विभिन्न दिशाओं में खींचकर उसे छिन्न-भिन्न कर देती हैं, वैसे ही इन्द्रियाँ भी उसे खींचती हैं — एक ओर भूख, दूसरी ओर तृष्णा, त्वचा, उदर, कान, नासिका, चञ्चल नेत्र और कर्मेन्द्रियाँ — सब अपनी-अपनी दिशाओं में। भगवान् नारायण ने अपनी माया-शक्ति से वृक्ष, सरीसृप, पशु, पक्षी, कीट और अनेक अन्य प्राणियों की सृष्टि की। किन्तु उनसे सन्तुष्ट न होकर उन्होंने बुद्धि से सम्पन्न मानव-शरीर की रचना की, जिससे जीव ब्रह्म के दर्शन करके परम आनन्द को प्राप्त कर सके। अनेक जन्मों के पश्चात् इस संसार में मनुष्य-शरीर मिलता है। यह शरीर क्षणभंगुर अवश्य है, किन्तु यही सच्चे पुरुषार्थ की प्राप्ति का साधन है। अतः विवेकशील पुरुष को चाहिए कि इस शरीर के नष्ट होने से पूर्व ही मोक्ष की प्राप्ति का प्रयत्न करे। विषय-भोग तो प्रत्येक जन्म में मिलते ही रहते हैं। इस प्रकार संसार से वैराग्य उत्पन्न होने पर, विवेक-ज्ञान के प्रकाश में संग और अहंकार का त्याग करके, आत्मा में अनुरक्त होकर मैं इस जगत् में विचरण करता हूँ। क्योंकि सत्य और परिपक्व ज्ञान एक ही गुरु से नहीं मिलता। ब्रह्म यद्यपि अद्वितीय है, तथापि विभिन्न साधकों द्वारा विविध प्रकार से उसका साक्षात्कार किया जाता है।

This body being of the nature of a tree, for whicl one gathers round him wife, children, wealth salina servants, house and relations, and maintains Hen ear ee money with great difficulty destroys himself by ae ning seeds for his next birth, the outcome of his i ak many wives shatter a householder, so does TOES attract it on one side, thirst on the other, skin, belly, ears, noses, the fickle eyes and energies of action in various other sides. Having created by his own energy of illusion, trees, rep- tiles, animals, birds, flies and various other creatures, and not being satisfied therewith, the Deity Narayana created the human body gifted with intellect so as to attain great delight by seeing Brahman. Having acquired in this world, after many births, a human body, though frail, which is the source of obta- ining true manliness, a wise man should, before it is destroy- ed, try to gain final liberation. The enjoyment of objects is found in all births. Having thus acquired disgust for the world and renouncing company and egoism through the light of discriminative knowledge and being attached to Atma, I wander in the world for true and well-deve- loped knowledge cannot be acquired from one preceptor. Because Brahman, although He is without a second, is ascertained in various modes by diverse ascetics.
