सञ्जय ने कहा — श्वेत के दक्षिण में और निषध के उत्तर में रोमणक नामक वर्ष स्थित है। वहाँ जन्म लेने वाले सभी मनुष्य गौर वर्ण के, उत्तम कुल में उत्पन्न और सुन्दर रूप वाले होते हैं। वे सब शत्रुरहित होते हैं। हे राजन्, वे सदा प्रसन्नचित्त रहते हुए ग्यारह हजार पाँच सौ वर्षों तक जीवित रहते हैं। निषध के दक्षिण में हिरण्मय नामक वर्ष है, जहाँ हिरण्वती नामक नदी बहती है। हे राजन्, वहाँ पक्षियों में श्रेष्ठ गरुड़ निवास करते हैं। हे नरेश, वहाँ के लोग यक्षों के अनुयायी, धनसम्पन्न और सुन्दर रूप वाले हैं। हे राजन्, वहाँ के मनुष्य महाबलशाली और प्रसन्नचित्त होते हैं तथा उनकी आयु बारह हजार पाँच सौ वर्ष की होती है। हे नरेश, शृङ्गवान् पर्वत के तीन सुन्दर शिखर हैं। उनमें से एक रत्नों और मणियों से निर्मित है, दूसरा अनेक प्रकार के रत्नों से बना और भव्य प्रासादों से सुशोभित होने के कारण अत्यन्त अद्भुत है। वहाँ शाण्डिली नामक स्वयंप्रकाशित देवी सदा निवास करती हैं। शृङ्गवान् के उत्तर में और समुद्र के तट तक ऐरावत नामक वर्ष विस्तृत है। इस रत्नमय पर्वत की उपस्थिति के कारण यह वर्ष सभी वर्षों में श्रेष्ठ है। वहाँ सूर्य ताप नहीं देता और मनुष्य जरा से मुक्त रहते हैं। वहाँ चन्द्रमा नक्षत्रों सहित ही एकमात्र प्रकाश का स्रोत बनकर आकाश को आलोकित करता है। वहाँ जन्म लेने वाले मनुष्य कमल के समान कान्ति और वर्ण वाले, कमल-दल के समान नेत्रों से युक्त और कमल की सुगन्ध से सुवासित होते हैं। उनके नेत्र निमेषरहित होते हैं, उनके शरीर से सुखद सुगन्ध निकलती है, वे बिना अन्न ग्रहण किए रहते हैं और उनकी इन्द्रियाँ सर्वथा वश में होती हैं।

"Sanjaya said.— 'On the south of Sweta and the north of Nishadha, is the Varsha, called Romanaka, The men that are born there are all of white complexion, of good parentage, and handsome features. And the men born there are also all without enemies. And they live, O king, for eleven thousand and five hundred years, being ever of cheerful hearts. On the south of Nishadha is the Varsha called Hiranmaya where is the river called Hiranwati. There, O king, liveth that foremost of birds named Garuda. And the people there, O monarch, are all followers of the Yakshas, wealthy, and of handsome features. And, O king, the men there are endued with great strength and have cheerful hearts, And they live for twelve thousand and five hundred years, O king, which is the measure of their lives. The mountains of Sringavat,1 O ruler of men, have three beautiful summits. One of these is made of jewels and gems, another is very wonderful, being made of all kinds of gems and adorned with palatial mansions. There the self-luminous lady named Sandili always liveth. On the north of Sringavat and up to the margin of the sea, O king, the Varsha called Airavat. And because this jewelled mountain is there, therefore is this Varsha superior to all. The sun giveth no heat there and men are not subject to decay. And the moon there, with the stars, becoming the only source of light, covereth ( the firmament ). Possessing the radiance and complexion of the lotus, and endued with eyes that resemble lotus-petals, the men born there have the fragrance of the lotus. With winkless eyes, and agreeable scent ( emanating from their bodies ), they go without food and have their senses under control.
