हे राजन्, धनञ्जय के बाणों से भयभीत होकर सवारहीन अश्व और पैदल सैनिक भी रणभूमि से भाग खड़े हुए। तुम्हारे सैनिक बिखरे केशों के साथ, कवच से रहित होकर, घावों से रक्त बहाते हुए, रणक्षेत्र को छोड़कर भय से पलायन कर गए। कुछ सैनिक ऐसे थे जो मानो किसी मगर ने उनके पैर पकड़ लिए हों — वे चलने में असमर्थ होकर वहीं पड़े रहे। कुछ अन्य ने मारे गए हाथियों के शवों के पीछे और नीचे छिपकर अपने प्राण बचाने का प्रयास किया। इस प्रकार तुम्हारी सेना को छिन्न-भिन्न करके, हे राजन्, धनञ्जय ने सिन्धु-नरेश के रक्षकों पर भीषण बाणवर्षा आरम्भ की। कर्ण, द्रोणपुत्र, कृप, शल्य, वृषसेन और दुर्योधन — इन सभी पर उसने अपने शरों की झड़ी लगा दी। अस्त्र-संचालन में वह इतना तीव्र था कि कोई भी यह नहीं देख पाता था कि अर्जुन ने बाण कब निकाला, कब प्रत्यञ्चा पर चढ़ाया, कब धनुष खींचा और कब छोड़ा। शत्रुओं पर प्रहार करते समय उसका धनुष निरन्तर पूर्ण वृत्त में खिंचा हुआ दिखाई देता था। उसके बाण धनुष से अविराम निकलते हुए चारों दिशाओं में बिखरते जाते थे। तत्पश्चात् अर्जुन ने कर्ण और वृषसेन दोनों के धनुष काट डाले, और एक चौड़े फल वाले बाण से शल्य के सारथी को रथ की नियत स्थान से गिरा दिया। फिर विजयियों में अग्रगण्य धनञ्जय ने अनेक बाणों से कृप और अश्वत्थामा को — जो मामा-भानजे के सम्बन्ध से बँधे थे — उस युद्ध में गहरे घायल किया। इस प्रकार तुम्हारी सेना के उन महारथियों को अत्यन्त पीड़ित करके, पाण्डु के पुत्र ने पाण्डु-पुत्र अर्जुन ने एक भयंकर बाण उठाया, जो अग्नि के समान तेजस्वी था। इन्द्र के वज्र की भाँति दीप्तिमान वह दुर्जय बाण दिव्य मन्त्रों से अभिमन्त्रित था और किसी भी आघात को सहन करने में समर्थ था। उसे सदा धूप और पुष्पमालाओं से पूजा जाता था। उस महाबाहु कुरुवंशी अर्जुन ने विधिपूर्वक उस बाण को वज्र के समान बल से मन्त्रों द्वारा अभिमन्त्रित किया और गाण्डीव पर चढ़ाया। जब वह अग्नि के समान दीप्तिमान बाण प्रत्यञ्चा पर स्थापित हुआ, तो हे राजन्, आकाश में ऊँचे-ऊँचे जयघोष सुनाई दिए। तब जनार्दन ने एक बार फिर अर्जुन से शीघ्रता से कहा — हे धनञ्जय, उस दुरात्मा सिन्धु-नरेश का शीश शीघ्र काट डालो! सूर्य अस्ताचल की ओर बढ़ रहा है। किन्तु पहले जयद्रथ के वध के विषय में मेरे वचन सुनो। जयद्रथ के पिता वृद्धक्षत्र हैं, जो सारे संसार में विख्यात हैं। बहुत काल के पश्चात् उन्हें शत्रुओं का संहार करने वाला यह पुत्र जयद्रथ प्राप्त हुआ था। पुत्र के जन्म के समय मेघ और नगाड़े के समान गम्भीर एक आकाशवाणी हुई, जो अदृश्य और अशरीरी थी। उसने राजा वृद्धक्षत्र से कहा — हे प्रभो, तुम्हारा यह पुत्र इस संसार में सूर्यवंश और चन्द्रवंश दोनों के योग्य होगा — रक्त, आचरण, संयम और अन्य गुणों में। यह क्षत्रियों में अग्रगण्य होगा और वीरों द्वारा सदा पूजित रहेगा। किन्तु युद्ध में संघर्ष करते हुए कोई क्षत्रियों में श्रेष्ठ, संसार में विख्यात, क्रोध से प्रज्वलित वीर इसका शीश काट देगा। शत्रुओं को दण्ड देने वाले सिन्धु-नरेश वृद्धक्षत्र ने ये वचन सुनकर कुछ काल तक विचार किया।
English Summary
Steeds destitute of riders and foot-soldiers also, O king, fled away, O monarch, from fear, struck with the shafts of Dhananjaya. Indeed, thy soldiers, with dishevelled hair and deprived of their coats of mail, with blood streaming out of their wounds, fled away in terror, leaving the field of battle. And some, deprived of the power of motion as if their lower limbs had been seized by alligators, remained on the field. And others concealed themselves behind and under the bodies of slain elephants. Routing thy host thus, O king, Dhananjaya began to strike with terrible shafts the protectors of the ruler of the Sindhus with his arrowy showers, Kama and Drona's son and Kripa and Salya and Vrishasena and Duryodhana. So quick was he in the use of wea- pons that no one could mark when Arjuna took out his arrows, when he fixed them on the bowstring, when he stretched the bow and let them off. Indeed, while striking the foe, his bow was seen incessantly drawn to a circle. His arrows also were seen incessantly issuing out of his bow and scattered in all directions. Then cutting off Kama's bow as also of Vrishasena's, Arjuna felled Salya's driver from his niche in the car, with a broad-headed arrow. With many arrows that fore- most of victors, viz., Dhananjaya, then deeply pierced in that battle Kripa and Aswatthaman, related as uncle and nephew to each other. Sorely afflicting those mighty car-warriors of thy army thus, the son of Pandu took up a terrible arrow of fiery splendour. Looking like the thunderbolt of Indra, and inspired with divine mantras, that formidable arrow was capable of bearing any strain. And It had been always worshipped with incense and garlands of flowers. Duly inspiring It (by mantras) with the force of the thunderbolt, that descendant of Kuru, viz., the mighty-armed Arjuna, fixed It on Gandiva. When that arrow of fiery effulgence was fixed on the bowstring, loud shouts, O king, were heard in the welkin. Then Janardana, once more address- ing Arjuna, quickly said, 'O Dhananjaya, quickly cut off the head of the wicked-souled ruler of the Sindhus ! The sun is about to get at the mountain of Asia. Listen, however, to the words I say about the slaughter of Jayadratha The father of Jayadratha is Vriddhakshatra known all over the world. It was after a long time that he got Jaya- dratha, that slayer of foes, for his son. (At the birth of the son) an incorporeal and invisible voice, deep as that of the clouds or of the drum, said unto king Vriddhakshatra, 'This thy son, O lord, amongst men in this world will become worthy of the two races (viz., the Solar and the Lunar ) in respect of blood, behaviour, self-restraint and the other attributes. He will become one of the foremost of Kshatriyas, and will always be worshipped by heroes. But while struggling in battle, some bull among the Kshatriyas, some conspicuous person in the world, excited with wrath, will cut off this one's head.' That chastiser of foes, viz., the (old) ruler of the Sindhus, hearing these words, reflect- ed for sometime.
