गरुड़ ने कहा — यह दिशा वरुण की प्रिय दिशा है, जो समुद्र के अधिपति हैं। जल के स्वामी का उद्गम यहीं हुआ था और यहीं उनकी सत्ता विराजमान है। हे द्विजश्रेष्ठ, दिन के अन्त में सूर्य यहीं अपनी किरणें समेट लेते हैं, इसीलिए इस दिशा को पश्चिम कहा जाता है। समस्त जलचर प्राणियों पर शासन करने के लिए और जल की रक्षा के निमित्त, तेजस्वी महर्षि कश्यप ने वरुण को यहाँ का अधिपति नियुक्त किया। वरुण के छहों रसों का पान करके चन्द्रमा, जो अन्धकार का नाशक है, प्रत्येक पक्ष के आरम्भ में पुनः युवा हो जाता है। हे ब्राह्मण, इसी दिशा में दैत्य वायुदेव द्वारा परास्त किए गए और दृढ़ता से बाँध दिए गए। प्रचण्ड आँधी से पीड़ित होकर और कठिनाई से श्वास लेते हुए वे अन्ततः यहीं उस निद्रा में सो गए जिससे जागरण नहीं होता। यहीं वह अस्त पर्वत है जो सन्ध्याकाल का कारण है और जो प्रतिदिन प्रेमपूर्वक सूर्य को अपनी ओर आते देखकर उन्हें ग्रहण करता है। इसी दिशा से दिन के अन्त में रात्रि और निद्रा निकलकर समस्त प्राणियों के जीवनकाल का आधा भाग हर लेने के लिए चारों ओर फैल जाती हैं। यहीं इन्द्र ने अपनी विमाता देवी दिति को गर्भावस्था में सोते हुए देखकर उनके गर्भ को उनचास खण्डों में काट दिया था, जिससे उनचास मरुतों का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिशा में हिमवान् की जड़ें समुद्र में स्थित शाश्वत मन्दर पर्वत की ओर फैली हुई हैं। सहस्र वर्षों तक चलते रहने पर भी उन जड़ों का अन्त नहीं पाया जा सकता।
English Summary
"Gadura said,— This quarter is the favourite one of king Varund, the ruler of the ocean, Indeed, the Lord of the waters had his origin here, and It is hither that sovereignty lieth. And since It is here that towards the day's end (Paschat) the sun dismissath his rays that this quarter, O best of the twice-born ones, is called the west (Paschima). For ruling over all acquatic creatures and for the protection of the water themselves, illustrious and divine Kasyapa installed Varuna here (as the king of this region). Qaaffing all the six juices of Varuna, the moon* the dispeller of darkness, becoraeth young again in the beginning of the fortnight. It was in this quarter, O Brahmana, that the Daityas were routed and bound fast by the Wind-god. And afflicted by a mighty tempest, and breathing hard (as they fled), they at last laid themselves down in this region to sleep (the sleep that knows no waking). Hither is that mountain called Asta which is the cause of the evening twilight, and which (daily) receiveth the Sun lovingly turning towards It. It is from this quarter that both Night and Sleep, issuing out at the close of day. spread themselves, as if, for robbing all living creatures of half their allotted periods of life. It was here that Sakra, beholding (his step-mother) the goddess Did lying asleep in a state of pregnancy, cut off the foetus (into forty-nine parts), whence sprang the (forty-nine) Maruts. It is towards this direction that the roots of Himavat stretch towards the eternal Mandara (sunk in the ocean). By j >urneying for even a thousand years one cannot attain to the end of those roots.
