देवताओं सहित स्वयं वासव भी उसके समक्ष थे। तेज और बल में वह अग्निदेव और वायुदेव के समान था। गाम्भीर्य में वह पाताललोक की भाँति अथाह था। मित्रों के आनन्द को बढ़ाने वाला वह कर्ण शत्रुओं के लिए साक्षात् यमराज के समान था। ऐसे कर्ण को भीषण युद्ध में मारकर तुम दोनों सौभाग्य से यहाँ आए हो — जैसे दो देवता किसी असुर को परास्त करके लौटे हों। हे अच्युत, हे अर्जुन, आज मेरे और उस प्रलयंकारी वीर के बीच घोर युद्ध हुआ, जब वह समस्त प्राणियों का संहार करने पर उतारू था। उसने मेरी ध्वजा काट दी और मेरे दोनों पार्श्णि सारथियों को भी मार डाला। युयुधान, धृष्टद्युम्न, नकुल-सहदेव, वीर शिखण्डी, द्रौपदी के पुत्रों और समस्त पाञ्चालों के सामने ही उसने मुझे रथहीन और कर्णहीन कर दिया। उन असंख्य शत्रुओं को परास्त करने के पश्चात् महाबलशाली कर्ण ने मुझे भी परास्त कर दिया, हे महाबाहो, यद्यपि मैंने युद्ध में पूरे संकल्प के साथ प्रयास किया। तत्पश्चात् वह मेरा पीछा करते हुए, मेरे सभी रक्षकों को निस्सन्देह परास्त करके, उस योद्धाओं में श्रेष्ठ ने मुझे अनेक कठोर वचन कहे। हे धनञ्जय, मैं अभी जीवित हूँ तो केवल भीमसेन के पराक्रम के कारण। इससे अधिक क्या कहूँ — वह अपमान मुझसे सहन नहीं होता। हे धनञ्जय, तेरह वर्षों तक कर्ण के भय से मुझे न रात को नींद मिली, न दिन को चैन। कर्ण के प्रति घृणा से मेरा हृदय जलता रहा, हे धनञ्जय। जैसे वद्धरीनास पक्षी भाग जाता है, वैसे ही मैं कर्ण से भाग खड़ा हुआ, यह जानते हुए कि मेरे विनाश का समय आ गया है।
English Summary

My standard was cut down, and my two Parshni drivers also were slain by him. I was also made steedless and earless by him in the very sight of Yuyudhana, of Dhirishtadyumna, of the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), of the heroic Sikhandin, as also in the very sight of the sons of Draupadi, and all the Panchalas ! Having vanquished those innumerable foes, Kama of mighty energy then vanquished me, O thou of mighty arms, although I exerted myself resolutely in battle ! Pursuing me then and without doubt, vanquishing all my protectors, that foremost of warriors address- ed me in diverse harsh speeches. That I am still alive, O Dhananjaya, is due to the prowess of Bhimasena. • What more need I say ? I am unable to bear that humiliation ! For thirteen years, O Dhananjaya, through fear of Kama, I did not obtain any sleep by night or any com- fort by day ! Filled with hatred of Kama, I burn, O Dhananjaya ! Like the bird Vaddhrinasa I fled from Kama, knowing that the time for my own destruction had come.
