पाण्डु-पुत्र से ये वचन कहे — "सत्य है कि इस शस्त्रधारियों में श्रेष्ठ, सेनापतियों के सेनापति को स्वयं वृत्रहन्ता भी युद्ध में नहीं जीत सकते। हे पाण्डव-पुत्रो, धर्म को एक ओर रखकर विजय का विचार करो, अन्यथा सुवर्ण-रथी द्रोण इस युद्ध में तुम सबका वध कर देंगे। मेरा विचार है कि अश्वत्थामा के पतन का समाचार सुनकर वे युद्ध नहीं करेंगे। कोई व्यक्ति उनसे मिथ्या कह दे कि अश्वत्थामा युद्ध में मारा गया।" ये वचन सुनकर कुन्ती-पुत्र धनञ्जय ने इसे स्वीकार नहीं किया। किन्तु अन्य सभी ने इस परामर्श को मान लिया, और युधिष्ठिर ने भी कुछ संकोच के साथ इसे स्वीकृति दी। तब भीमसेन ने कुछ लज्जा के साथ तुम्हारे पिता से कहा — "अश्वत्थामा मारा गया।" किन्तु तुम्हारे पिता ने उनकी बात पर विश्वास नहीं किया। उस समाचार को मिथ्या जानकर, तुम पर अत्यन्त स्नेह रखने वाले तुम्हारे पिता ने युधिष्ठिर से पूछा कि क्या तुम सचमुच मारे गए हो अथवा नहीं। मिथ्या के भय से पीड़ित और विजय की अभिलाषा से युक्त युधिष्ठिर ने उस समय मालव-नरेश इन्द्रवर्मन का एक विशाल हाथी — जो पर्वत के समान विशालकाय था और जिसका नाम अश्वत्थामा था — भीम द्वारा रणभूमि में मारा हुआ देखा। तब वे द्रोण के पास गए और उनसे कहा — "जिसके लिए तुम शस्त्र उठाते हो, जिसे देखकर तुम जीते हो, तुम्हारा वह सदा प्रिय पुत्र अश्वत्थामा मारा गया। वह निर्जीव होकर धरती पर युवा सिंह की भाँति पड़ा है।" मिथ्या के दुष्परिणामों को भली-भाँति जानने वाले राजा ने उस ब्राह्मण-श्रेष्ठ से ये वचन कहे, किन्तु "अश्वत्थामा" के पश्चात् "हाथी" शब्द उन्होंने इतने धीमे स्वर में कहा कि वह सुनाई न पड़ा। पुत्र के पतन का समाचार सुनकर द्रोण शोक से व्याकुल होकर विलाप करने लगे। उन्होंने अपने दिव्यास्त्रों को रोक लिया और पहले की भाँति युद्ध नहीं किया।
English Summary
to the son of Pandu, said these words : 'Truly, this foremost of all wielders of arms, this leader of the leaders is incapable of being vanquished in battle by the slayer of Vritra himself. Ye sons of Pandu, laying aside righteousness, take care of victory, so that Drona of the golden car may not slay all of you in battle. I think he will not fight after the fall of Aswatthaman. Let some man falsely tell him that Aswatthaman has been slain in battle.' Hearing these words, Kunti's son, Dhananjaya, approved them not. The advice, however, met with the approval of all others, and even of Yudhishthira with some difficulty. Then, Bhinasena, with a tinge of bashfulness, said unto thy sire, 'Aswatthaman hath been slain.' Thy sire, however, did not believe him. Suspecting the intelli- gence to be false, thy father, so affectionate towards thee, enquired of Yudhishthira as to whether thou wert really dead or not. Afflicted with the fear of a lie, solicitous at the same time of victory, Yudhishthira, beholding a mighty elephant, huge as a hill and called Aswatthaman, belonging to the Malava chief, Indravarman, slain on the field by Bhima, approached Drona and answered him, saying, 'He for whom thou wieldest weapons, he, looking upon whom thou livest, that ever dear son cf thine, $iz., Aswatthaman, hath been slain. Deprived of life he lieth on the bare ground like a young lion.' Aware fully of the evil consequences of falsehood, the king spoke those words unto that best of Brahmanas, indistinctly adding elephant (after Aswatthaman). Hearing of the fallN of his son, he began to wail aloud, afflicted with grief. Kestraining (the force of ) his celestial weapons, he fought not as before.
