वैशम्पायन ने कहा — (आगे) राजा के ये वचन सुनकर वह तेजस्वी देव प्रसन्न हुए और मुस्कुराते हुए बोले — "हम स्वयं यज्ञों में सहायता नहीं करते। किन्तु हे राजन्, तुमने वर की अभिलाषा से घोर तपस्या की है, इसलिए हे शत्रुदमन, मैं एक शर्त पर तुम्हारे यज्ञ में सहायता करूँगा।" रुद्र ने आगे कहा — "हे राजाधिराज, यदि तुम बारह वर्षों तक बिना किसी व्यवधान के अग्नि में घृत की आहुतियाँ देते रहो और इस सम्पूर्ण काल में एकाग्रचित्त होकर ब्रह्मचारी का जीवन व्यतीत करो, तो मैं तुम्हें वह दूँगा जो तुमने माँगा है।" रुद्र के इन वचनों को सुनकर राजा श्वेतकि ने वह सब किया जो त्रिशूलधारी ने उन्हें करने का निर्देश दिया था। बारह वर्ष बीत जाने पर वे पुनः महेश्वर के पास आए। जगत के सृष्टिकर्ता शङ्कर ने उस श्रेष्ठ नरेश श्वेतकि को देखकर अत्यन्त प्रसन्न होते हुए तत्काल कहा — "हे राजश्रेष्ठ, तुमने अपने इस कर्म से मुझे सन्तुष्ट किया है। किन्तु हे शत्रुदमन, यज्ञ में सहायता करना ब्राह्मणों का धर्म है। इसलिए हे शत्रुतापन, मैं स्वयं आज तुम्हारे यज्ञ में सहायता नहीं करूँगा। इस पृथ्वी पर एक महान ब्राह्मण हैं जो मेरे ही अंश हैं। वे दुर्वासा नाम से विख्यात हैं। वही महातेजस्वी ब्राह्मण तुम्हारे यज्ञ में सहायता करेंगे। अतः सब तैयारियाँ करो।" रुद्र के ये वचन सुनकर राजा अपनी राजधानी लौट आए और आवश्यक सामग्री एकत्र करने लगे। जब सब कुछ संग्रह हो गया, तब वे नरेश पुनः रुद्र के समक्ष उपस्थित हुए और बोले — "सभी आवश्यक वस्तुएँ एकत्र हो गई हैं और सारी तैयारियाँ पूर्ण हैं।"
English Summary
Vaisampayana said,— (continued) Hearing these words spoken by the monarch, the illustrious god was gratified, and smilingly said, — 'We do not ourselves assist at sacrifices : but as thou, O king, hast undergone severe penances, desirous of obtaining a boon, I will, O chastiser of foes, assist at thy sacrifice, upon, O king, this condition I Ani Rudra conti- nued— 'If, O king of kings, thou canst, for twelve years, pour without intermission libations of clarified butter into the fire, thyself leading all the while the life of a Brahmacharin with rapt attention, then thou shalt obtain from me what thou askest ! King Swetaki, thus addressed by Rudra, did all that he was directed to do by the wielder of the trident. And after twelve years had elapsed, he again came unto Maheswara. And Sankara, the Creator of the worlds, upon seeing Swetaki, that excellent monarch, immediately said, in great gratification,— 'I have been gratified by thee, of best of kings, with this thy own act 1 But, O chastiser of foes, the duty of assisting at sacrifices properly belongeth to Brahmanas. Therefore, O oppressor of foes, I will not myself assist at thy sacrifice to-day ! There is on earth an exalted Brahmana who is even a portion of my own self ! He is known by the name of Durvasah. Even that Brahmana endued with great energy will assist you in thy sacrifice. Let, therefore, every preparation be made I ' Hearing these words uttered by Rudra, the king, returning to his own capital, began to collect all that was necessary.
