सञ्जय ने कहा — तब, हे सिरे, कृतवर्मा, कृप, द्रोण के पुत्र, सूत-पुत्र कर्ण, उलूक, सुबल के पुत्र शकुनि, और स्वयं राजा दुर्योधन अपने सहोदर भाइयों सहित — ये सभी पाण्डु-पुत्र के भय से व्याकुल कुरु-सेना को देखकर, जो समुद्र में टूटे हुए जहाज की भाँति एकजुट न रह सकती थी, उसे बचाने के लिए अत्यन्त वेग से आगे बढ़े। हे भारत, थोड़े समय के लिए जो युद्ध पुनः आरम्भ हुआ, वह अत्यन्त भीषण हो गया — कायरों के भय को और वीरों के उल्लास को बढ़ाने वाला। कृप ने युद्ध में टिड्डियों के झुण्ड की भाँति घने बाण-वर्षा करके श्रृञ्जय-सेना को ढक दिया। तब शिखण्डी क्रोध से भरकर गौतम के पौत्र कृप की ओर तीव्र गति से बढ़ा और उस ब्राह्मण-श्रेष्ठ पर चारों ओर से बाणों की वर्षा करने लगा। तब उच्चतम अस्त्रों के ज्ञाता कृप ने उस बाण-वर्षा को रोककर, क्रोधपूर्वक शिखण्डी को दस बाणों से बेध दिया। तब शिखण्डी ने क्रोध से भरकर उस संग्राम में कृप को काँक-पंखों से युक्त सात सीधे बाणों से गहरे घायल किया। तब वे महारथी ब्राह्मण कृप उन तीखे बाणों से गहरे आहत होकर भी शिखण्डी को उसके घोड़ों, सारथी और रथ से वञ्चित कर दिया। रथहीन होने पर वह पराक्रमी महारथी शिखण्डी रथ से कूद पड़ा और तलवार तथा ढाल लेकर उस ब्राह्मण पर वेगपूर्वक झपटा। पाञ्चाल-राजकुमार को आते देख कृप ने उस संग्राम में तत्काल अनेक सीधे बाणों से उसे ढक दिया — यह दृश्य अत्यन्त अद्भुत प्रतीत हुआ। हे राजन्, वह दृश्य सचमुच अत्यन्त विस्मयकारी था, मानो पत्थर उड़ रहे हों, क्योंकि शिखण्डी उस युद्ध में सर्वथा निष्क्रिय खड़ा रह गया। हे राजश्रेष्ठ, कृप द्वारा शिखण्डी को बाणों से आच्छादित देख, महारथी धृष्टद्युम्न तीव्र गति से कृप की ओर बढ़ा।
English Summary
Sanjaya said, "Then Kritavarman, and Kripa, and the son of Drona and the Suta's son, O sire, and Uluka, and Suvala's son (Sakuni), and the king himself, with his uterine brothers, beholding the (Kuru) army afflicted with the fear of Pandu's son, unable to stand together like a vessel wrecked on the ocean, endeavoured to rescue It with great speed. For a short space of time, O Bharata, the battle that once more took place became exceedingly fierce, enhancing as It did the fears of timid and the joy of the brave. The dense showers of arrows shot in battle by Kripa, thick, as flights of locusts, covered the Srinjayas. Then Sikhandin, filled with rage, speedily proceeded against the grandson of Gautama (Kripa) and poured upon that bull amongst Brahmanas his arrowy downpours from all sides. Acquainted with the highest weapons Kripa then checked that arrowy downpour, and wrathfully pierced Sikhandin with ten arrows in that battle. Then Sikhandin filled with rage, deeply pierced Kripa, in that encounter, with seven straight arrows equipt with Kanka feathers. The twice-born Kripa then, that great car- warrior, deeply pierced with those keen arrows, depriv ed Sikhandin of his steeds, driver and car. Jumping down from his steedless vehicle, the mighty car -warrior (Sikhandin) rushed ; impetuously at the Brahmana, having taken up a sword and a shield. As the Panchala prince advanced, Kripa quickly covered him with many straight arrows in that encounter, which seemed exceedingly wonderful. Indeed, exceedingly wonderful was the sight that we then beheld, even like the flying of rocks, for Sikhan- din, O king, (thus assailed) remained perfectly inactive in that battle. Beholding Sikhandin covered (with arrows) by Kripa, O best of the kings, the mighty car-warrior Dhrishtadyumna speedily proceeded against Kripa.
