हे अङ्गिरा-कुल के श्रेष्ठ! जब हम उन सहस्रों शुद्ध वंश के पुरुषों के मध्य खड़े थे, तब किसी ने भी हमें दृष्टि या संकेत से सम्मान नहीं दिया। वे सभी तपस्वी प्रसन्नचित्त थे, भक्ति से परिपूर्ण थे और ब्रह्म-भाव की साधना में लीन थे — फिर भी उन्होंने हमारे प्रति कोई भाव प्रकट नहीं किया। हम अत्यन्त थके हुए थे और तपस्या से हमारे शरीर क्षीण हो चुके थे। उसी समय आकाश से एक अशरीरी सत्ता ने हमें सम्बोधित करते हुए ये वचन कहे — "ये श्वेत पुरुष, जो समस्त बाह्य इन्द्रियों से रहित हैं, नारायण के दर्शन करने में समर्थ हैं। जिन द्विजश्रेष्ठों को ये श्वेत पुरुष अपनी दृष्टि से सम्मानित करते हैं, वे ही उस महान देव के दर्शन के योग्य होते हैं। हे मुनियो, तुम यहाँ से उस स्थान को लौट जाओ जहाँ से तुम आए हो। जो भक्ति से रहित है, वह उस महान देवता के दर्शन कभी नहीं कर सकता। अपने दिव्य तेज के कारण वे अदृश्य रहते हैं — केवल वे ही उनके दर्शन कर सकते हैं जो दीर्घ युगों तक एकनिष्ठ भाव से उन्हीं की आराधना में समर्पित रहते हैं। हे द्विजश्रेष्ठो, तुम्हें एक महान कर्तव्य निभाना है। इस कृत युग की समाप्ति के पश्चात्, विवस्वत् के चक्र में जब त्रेता युग आएगा, तब संसार पर एक महान विपत्ति आएगी। हे मुनियो, उस समय तुम्हें देवताओं का साथ देकर उस विपत्ति को दूर करना होगा।" उस महान देवता की कृपा से, अमृत के समान मधुर उन अद्भुत वचनों को सुनकर, हम शीघ्र ही अपने अभीष्ट स्थान को लौट आए।
English Summary
foremost one of Angira's race. As we stood among those thousands of men all whom were of pure descent, no one honoured us with a glance or nod. Those ascetics, all of whom were cheerful and filled with devo- tion and who were all practising the Brahma-frame of mind, did not show any kind of feeling for us-' We had been exceedingly tired. Our penances had emaciated us. At that time, an incorporeal Being address- ed us from the sky and said unto us these words — These white men, who are divested of all outer senses, are competent to behold (Narayana). Only those foremost of regenerate persons whom these white men honoured with their glances, become competent to behold the great God.2 Go hence, ye Munis, to the place whence ye have come. That great Deity is incapable of being ever seen by one that is destitute of devotion. Incapable of being seen in consequence of his dazzling efful- gence, that illustrious Deity can be beheld by only those persons that in course of long ages succeed in devoting themselves wholly and solely to Him. Ye foremost of regenerate one, ye have a great duty to per- form- After the expiration of this the Krita age, when the Treta age comes in course of the Vivaswat cycle, a great calamity will overtake the worlds. Ye Munis, ye shall then have to become the allies of the deities (for dispelling that calamity) — Having heard these wonderful words that were sweet as nectar, we soon got back to the place we desiredf through the grace of that great Deity.
