तब हमने वीर पार्थ का पराक्रम देखा, उनके बाणों की अक्षय धारा देखी, और गाण्डीव धनुष का अपार बल भी देखा। उन्होंने द्रोणपुत्र और कृप के अस्त्रों को अपने अस्त्रों से निष्फल करते हुए उन सभी योद्धाओं को नौ-नौ बाणों से बेध दिया। तब द्रोणपुत्र ने उन्हें पच्चीस बाणों से, वृषसेन ने सात बाणों से, दुर्योधन ने बीस बाणों से, और कर्ण तथा शल्य ने प्रत्येक ने तीन-तीन बाणों से बेधा। वे सभी उन पर गर्जना करते रहे और बार-बार बाण चलाते रहे। अपने धनुषों को कम्पित करते हुए उन्होंने अर्जुन को चारों ओर से घेर लिया और अपने रथों को उनके चारों ओर एक घेरे में खड़ा कर दिया। सूर्यास्त की आकांक्षा रखते हुए कौरव सेना के वे महारथी, जो अत्यन्त स्फूर्तिवान थे, अर्जुन पर गर्जना करने लगे और अपने धनुषों को हिलाते हुए उन पर तीखे बाणों की वर्षा करने लगे, जैसे मेघ पर्वत पर जलधारा बरसाता है। हे राजन्, उन वीर योद्धाओं ने, जिनकी भुजाएँ भारी गदाओं के समान थीं, उस अवसर पर धनञ्जय के शरीर पर दिव्यास्त्र भी छोड़े। आपकी सेना में अपार संहार करने के पश्चात वह महाबली और अजेय धनञ्जय, जिनका पराक्रम कभी विफल नहीं होता, सिन्धु-नरेश की ओर बढ़े। किन्तु हे राजन्, कर्ण ने अपने बाणों से उस युद्ध में भीमसेन और साात्वत की दृष्टि के सामने ही उन्हें रोक लिया। तब महाबाहु पार्थ ने समस्त सैनिकों के देखते-देखते सूतपुत्र को बाणों से बेध दिया।
English Summary
We then beheld the prowess of the brave Partha as also the inexhaustible charac- ter of his shafts, and the might, too, of his bow Gandiva. Baffling with his own weapons those of Drona's son and Kripa, he pierced every one of those warriors with nine shafts Then, Drona's son pierced him with five and twenty arrows, and Vrishasena with seven, and Duryo- dhana pierced him with twenty, and Kama and Salya each with three. And all of them roared at him and continued to pierce him frequently, and shaking their bows, they surrounded him on all sides. And soon they caused their cars to be drawn up in a serried line around Arjuna. Desirous of the ( speedy ) setting of the sun, those mighty car-warriors of the Kaurava army, endued with great activ ity, began to roar at Arjuna, and shaking their bows, covered him with showers of keen arrows like cloud pouring rain on a mountain. Those brave warriors, with arms resembling heavy clubs, also discharged on that occasion, O king, on Dhananjaya's body celestial weapons. Having caused an immense slaughter in thy army, the mighty and invincible Dhananjaya, of prowess incapable of being baffled came upon the ruler of the Sindhus. Kama, however, O king, with his arrows, resisted him in that battle in the very sight, O Bharata, of Bhimasena and Satwata.
