जनमेजय ने कहा — अनन्त काल से पाप में लिप्त, लोभ से अन्धा, दुष्ट मार्ग पर चलने वाला, अपने विनाश पर आमादा, स्वजनों के हृदय में शोक उत्पन्न करने वाला, मित्रों के दुःख को बढ़ाने वाला, अपने हितैषियों को पीड़ा देने वाला, शत्रुओं के हर्ष को द्विगुण करने वाला और अधर्म के पथ पर चलने वाले उस दुर्योधन को उसके मित्रों ने क्यों नहीं रोका? और उस कुरुकुल के महान मित्र, शान्तचित्त पवित्रात्मा ने अथवा पितामह ने स्नेहवश उसे कुछ क्यों नहीं कहा? वैशम्पायन ने कहा — हाँ, उस पवित्रात्मा ने कहा था। भीष्म ने भी हितकर वचन कहे थे। और नारद ने भी बहुत कुछ कहा था। जो कुछ इन सबने कहा, वह सब सुनो।
English Summary
Janamejaya said, — "Interminably wedded to evil, blinded by ava- rice, addicted to wicked courses, resolved upon bringing destruction on his head, inspiring grief in the hearts of kinsmen, enhancing the woes of friends, afflicting all his well-wishers, augmenting the joys of foes, and treading the wrong path, why did not his friends seek to restrain him, and why also did not that great friend (of Kuru's race), the holy one with tranquil soul, or the Grandsire tell him anything from affection ?" Vaisampayana said, — "Yes, the holy one did speak. Bhishma also spoke what was beneficial. And Narada too said much. Listen to all that these said.'1
