वासुदेव ने कहा — हे राजाधिराज, शाल्व, जो सौभ का स्वामी था, पैदल सेना, अश्वारोही और हाथियों की विशाल सेना लेकर हमारी नगरी की ओर बढ़ा। राजा शाल्व के नेतृत्व में चतुरंगिणी सेना ने एक समतल भूमि पर, जहाँ जल की प्रचुरता थी, अपना पड़ाव डाला। श्मशान, देवमन्दिर, पवित्र वृक्ष और वल्मीकों से आच्छादित भूमि को छोड़कर शत्रु-सेना ने अन्य सभी स्थानों पर अधिकार कर लिया। नगर की ओर जाने वाले मार्ग सेना के व्यूहों से अवरुद्ध हो गए, और गुप्त प्रवेश-द्वार भी शत्रु के शिविर से बंद कर दिए गए। हे कौरव्य, जैसे पक्षिराज गरुड़ झपटते हैं, वैसे ही सौभ का वह स्वामी द्वारका की ओर लपका — हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ, उसके साथ थी वह सेना जो सब प्रकार के अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से सुसज्जित थी, युद्धकला में निपुण थी, जिसमें रथों और हाथियों तथा अश्वारोहियों का घना समूह था, जो ध्वजाओं से सुशोभित थी, और जिसके पैदल सैनिक भली-भाँति वेतन पाए हुए, भली-भाँति पोषित, महाबलशाली, वीरता के सब चिह्नों से युक्त, अद्भुत रथों और धनुषों से सम्पन्न थे। शाल्व की उस सेना को देखकर वृष्णि वंश के युवा राजकुमारों ने नगर से निकलकर उसका सामना करने का निश्चय किया। हे राजन्, चारुदेष्ण, साम्ब और महापराक्रमी प्रद्युम्न — हे कुरुवंशज — कवच धारण किए, आभूषणों से अलंकृत, ध्वजाएँ फहराते हुए, अपने-अपने रथों पर आरूढ़ होकर निकले, और शाल्व की उस विशाल और अगणित सेना का सामना करने को तत्पर हुए। साम्ब ने धनुष उठाया और उत्साह के साथ आगे बढ़ा।

(Ar/unabhigamana Parva continued) "Vasudeva continued, 4O king of kings, Salwa, the lord of Saubha, came towards our city with an immense force consisting of infantry, cavalry and elephants ! And the army headed by king Salwa, consisting of four kinds of forces, occupied a level ground commanding a copious water-supply. And forsaking cemeteries and temples dedicated to the gods, and sacred trees, and grounds covered by ant-hills, that host occupied every other place. And the roads (leading to the city) were blocked up by the divisions of the army, and the secret entrances also were all blocked up by the enemy's camp. And, O Kauravya, like unto the lord of birds (Gadura), the ruler of Saubha rushed towards Dwaraka, bringing with him, O bull among men, his host equipped with all kinds of arms, skilled in all weapons, consisting of a dense display of cars and elephants and cavalry abounding in banners, and well-paid and well- fed foot-soldiers possessed of great strength and bearing every mark of heroism and furnished with wonderful chariots and bows. And behold- ing the army of Salwa, the youthful princes of the Vrishni race resolved to encounter It sallying out of the city. And, O king, Charudeshna, Samva, and the mighty warrior Pradyumna, O descendant of the Kuru race, sailed out, ascending onltheir chariots, and clad in mail, and deck- ed with ornaments, with colours flying, resolved to encounter the mighty and countless host of Salwa ! And Samva taking up his bows, eagerly
