शत्रु के प्राणों को भेदने में सिद्धहस्त उस पंखयुक्त बाण ने, मेरे पुत्र द्वारा छोड़े जाने पर, शाल्व का कवच भेदकर उसके हृदय में प्रवेश किया — और वह मूर्च्छित होकर गिर पड़ा। वीर राजा शाल्व को चेतनाशून्य होकर गिरते देख, दानवों में श्रेष्ठ वीर धरती को कँपाते हुए भाग खड़े हुए। हे पृथ्वीपते, शाल्व की सेना ने अपने राजा को, सौभ के स्वामी को, मूर्च्छित होकर गिरते देख "हा! हा!" के करुण उद्गार किये। हे कुरुनन्दन, तत्पश्चात् शाल्व ने चेतना प्राप्त कर उठते ही प्रद्युम्न पर बाणों की वर्षा कर दी। तब उस महाबाहु वीर प्रद्युम्न को शत्रु के बाणों ने कण्ठ के समीप गहरा घायल कर दिया और वे रथ पर शिथिल पड़ गये। हे महाराज, रुक्मिणी के पुत्र को घायल कर शाल्व ने सिंह की गर्जना के समान ऐसी ललकार लगाई जिससे सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी गूँज उठी। हे भारत, जब मेरा पुत्र मूर्च्छित हो गया, तब शाल्व ने एक क्षण भी न गँवाते हुए उस पर और भी दुःसह बाण छोड़े। असंख्य बाणों से बिंधकर और चेतना खोकर प्रद्युम्न हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ, रणभूमि में निश्चेष्ट हो गये।
English Summary
VANA fABVA 41 Entering the vitals of a foe in fight. And that winged shaft shot by my son, piercing Salwa's mail, entered his heart — whereupon he fell down in a swoon. And beholding the heroic king Salwa fallen down deprived of sense, the foremost of the Danavas fled away rending the ground beneath their feet. And, O lord of the earth, the army of Salwa sent up exclamations of Oh \ and Alas \ seeing their king, the lord of Saubha, drop down bereft of sense ! And O son of the Kuru race, regaining his senses, the mighty Salwa rose and all of a sudden discharged his arrows on Pradyumna. Then the heroic and mighty armed Praydumna, sorely pierced by his adversary about his throat, was enfeebled on his car. And, O mighty king, wounding the son of Rukmini, Salwa sent up a shout like unto the roar of a lion, and filling the entire earth with It I And, O Bharata, when my son became sense- less, Salwa, without losing a moment, again discharged at him other shafts difficult to bear. And pierced with numberless arrows and deprived of his senses, Pradyumna, O chief of the Kuru race, became motionless on the field of battle 1' '
