धनुषों में श्रेष्ठ वह वीर, शत्रुओं को परास्त करने के पश्चात् देवताओं के मध्य इन्द्र के समान अत्यन्त सुशोभित हो रहा है। वहाँ कौरव, कर्ण के पराक्रम को देखकर, पाण्डवों और सृञ्जयों को चारों ओर से भय से आतंकित करते हुए सिंहनाद कर रहे हैं। वहाँ कर्ण स्वयं, हे यशदाता, इस भीषण युद्ध में पाण्डवों को अपनी पूर्ण शक्ति से आतंकित करते हुए समस्त सैनिकों को सम्बोधित करके कह रहा है — "तुम्हारा कल्याण हो, आगे बढ़ो, हे कौरवो, इतनी तीव्र गति से आक्रमण करो कि इस युद्ध में कोई भी सृञ्जय जीवित न बच सके। यह कार्य तुम सब मिलकर करो। हम स्वयं तुम्हारे पीछे चलेंगे।" यह वचन कहकर वह बाण बरसाते हुए सेना के पीछे आगे बढ़ रहा है। इस युद्ध में श्वेत छत्र से सुशोभित कर्ण को देखो, जो चन्द्रमा से अलंकृत उदयाचल के समान प्रतीत हो रहा है। हे भारत, हे राजकुमार, सौ कड़ियों से युक्त उसका सुन्दर छत्र, जो पूर्णचन्द्र के समान है, उसके मस्तक पर धारण किया हुआ है — और इस युद्ध में कर्ण की दृष्टि तुम्हारी ओर लगी हुई है। निःसन्देह वह इस युद्ध में शीघ्र ही यहाँ आ पहुँचेगा। हे महाबाहो, उसे देखो — वह अपना भयंकर धनुष कैसे कम्पित कर रहा है और इस भीषण संग्राम में विषधर सर्पों के समान बाण छोड़ रहा है। वहाँ राधापुत्र, तुम्हारी ध्वजा पर अंकित वानर को देखकर, हे पार्थ, हे शत्रुतापन, तुमसे युद्ध की अभिलाषा लेकर इसी दिशा में मुड़ रहा है। वह अपने ही विनाश के लिए आ रहा है, ठीक वैसे जैसे कोई कीट दीपक की लौ में समा जाता है। क्रोधी और वीर यह कर्ण सदा धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र का हित करने में लगा रहता है। दुर्बुद्धि होने के कारण वह तुम्हें कभी सहन नहीं कर पाता। हे भारत, कर्ण को अकेला और असहाय देखकर धृतराष्ट्र का पुत्र दृढ़ संकल्प के साथ अपनी रथ-सेना सहित उसकी रक्षा के लिए उसकी ओर मुड़ रहा है।
English Summary
of bows, looketh exceedingly beautiful even as Sakra in the midst of the celestials, after vanquishing his foes. There the Kauravas, behold- ing the prowess of Kama, are roaring and inspiring the Pandus and the Srinjayas with fear on every side. There, Kama himself, terri- fying the Pandus with his whole soul, in dreadful battle, is addressing all the troops, O giver of honours, saying, 'Blessed be ye, advance, ye Kauravas and rush with such speed that no Srinjaya may, in this battle escape with life. United together, do this all of you. As regards ourselves, we will follow you behind.' Saying these words, he is advancing behind (his troops), scattering his shafts. Behold Karna, adorned with his white umbrella in this battle and looking like the Udaya hills adorned by the moon. With his beautiful umbrella of a hundred ribs, resembling the moon in full, held over his head, O Bharata, in this battle, Karna, O prince, is casting his glances after thee. Without doubt, he will, in this battle, come hither, with great speed. Behold him, O mighty-armed one, as he shaketh his formid- able bow and shooteth, in this dreadful battle, his shafts resembling snakes of virulent poison. There, the son of Radha turneth towards this direction, beholding thy banner bearing the ape, and desiring, O Partha, an encounter with thee, O scorcher of foes. Indeed, he cometh for his own destruction, ev en like an insect into the mouth of a lamp. Wrathful and brave, he is ever engaged in the good of Dhrita- rashtra's son. Of wicked understanding, he is always unable to put up with thee. Beholding Karna alone and unsupported, Dhrita- rashtra's son, O Bharata, turneth towards him with great resolution, accompanied by his car-force, for protecting him.
