वाह्लीक पृथ्वी के मैल हैं, और मद्र देश की स्त्रियाँ समस्त नारी जाति की मैल हैं।" एक बार एक राजा ने नदी में डूबते हुए एक राक्षस को बचाया। राजा के पूछने पर राक्षस ने यह उत्तर दिया। मैं वह उत्तर तुम्हें सुनाता हूँ, ध्यान से सुनो। "म्लेच्छ मनुष्यजाति के मैल हैं; तेली म्लेच्छों के मैल हैं; नपुंसक तेलियों के मैल हैं; और जो लोग अपने यज्ञों में क्षत्रियों से पौरोहित्य कराते हैं, वे नपुंसकों के मैल हैं। जो इन अन्तिम व्यक्तियों को अपना पुरोहित मानते हैं, उनका पाप तुम्हें लगेगा — और मद्रकों का पाप भी — यदि तुमने मुझे नहीं छोड़ा।" राक्षस ने यह भी बताया कि राक्षस से ग्रस्त व्यक्ति को अथवा विष के प्रभाव से मृतप्राय व्यक्ति को ठीक करने के लिए इन्हीं वचनों का प्रयोग किया जाना चाहिए। इसके आगे जो वचन हैं, वे सब परम सत्य हैं। पाञ्चाल वेदों में विहित धर्म का पालन करते हैं; कौरव सत्य का आचरण करते हैं; मत्स्य और शूरसेन यज्ञ करते हैं; पूर्व दिशा के लोग अपनी परम्परागत मर्यादाओं का अनुसरण करते हैं।
