सञ्जय ने कहा — तब कुरु और श्रृञ्जय एक बार फिर निर्भय होकर युद्ध में एक-दूसरे से भिड़ गए। पाण्डव-पक्ष का नेतृत्व युधिष्ठिर कर रहे थे और हमारा नेतृत्व सूतपुत्र कर्ण के हाथों में था। तब कर्ण और पाण्डवों के बीच एक भयंकर युद्ध आरम्भ हुआ, जो रोंगटे खड़े कर देने वाला था और जिसने यमराज के राज्य की जनसंख्या बढ़ा दी। रक्त की नदियाँ बहाने वाले उस भीषण संग्राम के आरम्भ होने पर, जब वीर संशप्तकों में से केवल थोड़े-से ही जीवित बचे थे — हे भारत — तब धृष्टद्युम्न ने, हे महाराज, समस्त राजाओं और उन महारथी पाण्डवों के साथ मिलकर आगे प्रस्थान किया।
