हे राजन्, उन्होंने वेदों के उच्च वचनों से उस परमात्मा की स्तुति की — जो सभी भयपूर्ण परिस्थितियों में भय का नाश करने वाले हैं, जो विश्वात्मा हैं, परमात्मा हैं, और जिन्होंने अपनी आत्मा से इस समस्त जगत को व्याप्त कर रखा है। तब वे देवगण — जिन्होंने विशेष तपस्या द्वारा अपनी आत्मा की समस्त वृत्तियों को शान्त करना और आत्मा को प्रकृति से पृथक् करना सीखा था, जो सदा अपनी आत्मा को वश में रखते थे — उन्होंने ईशान नाम से विख्यात, उमापति, तेजःपुञ्ज, ब्रह्माण्ड में जिनके समान कोई नहीं, जो समस्त का मूलस्रोत हैं और जो निष्पाप स्वयं हैं — उन देव का साक्षात् दर्शन किया। यद्यपि वह देव एक ही हैं, तथापि सबने अपने-अपने हृदय में उनकी भिन्न-भिन्न रूपों में कल्पना की थी। उस महात्मा में अपने-अपने मन में जो रूप धारण किए थे, वे सब रूप प्रत्यक्ष देखकर सभी देवगण विस्मय से भर गए। उस अजन्मे, जगदीश्वर को समस्त प्राणियों का मूर्त स्वरूप जानकर देवताओं और ब्राह्मण ऋषियों ने पृथ्वी पर मस्तक टेक दिए। भगवान् शङ्कर ने उन्हें "स्वागत है" कहकर अभिवादन किया और उन्हें प्रणाम की मुद्रा से उठाकर मुस्कुराते हुए कहा — "अपने आगमन का प्रयोजन बताओ।" त्रिनेत्र देव की इस आज्ञा से उनके हृदय हल्के हो गए। तब उन्होंने उनसे ये वचन कहे — "हे प्रभो, आपको बारम्बार प्रणाम है। आपको प्रणाम है जो समस्त देवताओं के उद्गम हैं, आपको प्रणाम है जो धनुष धारण करते हैं, आपको प्रणाम है जो क्रोध से परिपूर्ण हैं। आपको प्रणाम है जिन्होंने प्रजापति दक्ष के यज्ञ का विध्वंस किया था।"
English Summary
And they praised, O king, in the high words of the Vedas, that dis- peller of fears in all situations of fear that Universal Soul, that Supreme Soul, that One by whom All this is pervaded with his Soul. Then the gods who, by special penances, had learnt to still all the functions of his Soul and to withdraw Soul from Matter, — they who had their soul always under control — beheld him, called Ishana, — that lord of Uma, that mass of energy,— that is, who hath no equal in the universe, that source (of everything), that sinless Self. Though that Deity is one, they had imagined him to be of various forms. Beholding in that high- souled one those diverse forms that each had individually conceived in own heart, all of them became filled with wonder. Beholding that Unborn one, that Lord of the universe, to be the embodiment of all creatures, the gods and the regenerate Riihis, all touched the Earth with their heads. Saluting them with the word — Welcome — and rising them from their bent attitudes, the illustrious Sankara addressed them smilingly, saying, 'Tell us the object of your visit.' Commanded by the Three-eyed god, their hearts became easy. They then said these words unto him, 'Our repeated salutations to thee, O Lord. Saluta- tions to thee that art the source of all the gods, to thee that art armed with the bow, to thee that art full of wrath.
