तब सात्वत ने, हे पितामह, कर्ण को तीन बाणों से बेधा। भीमसेन ने भी उसे तीन बाणों से बेधा, और स्वयं पार्थ ने पुनः सात बाणों से। तब महारथी कर्ण ने उन तीनों वीरों में से प्रत्येक को साठ-साठ बाणों से बेध डाला। इस प्रकार, हे राजन्, एक ओर अकेले कर्ण और दूसरी ओर अनेक योद्धाओं के बीच वह भयंकर युद्ध होता रहा। हे पितामह, उस समय सूतपुत्र का जो पराक्रम हमने देखा, वह अत्यन्त अद्भुत था — क्योंकि क्रोध से उत्तेजित होकर उसने अकेले ही उन तीन महारथियों का सामना किया। तब महाबाहु फाल्गुन ने उस युद्ध में विकर्तन-पुत्र कर्ण के समस्त अंगों को सौ बाणों से बेध दिया। रक्त से नहाए हुए, महापराक्रमी सूतपुत्र ने भी फाल्गुन को पचास बाणों से बेधकर प्रत्युत्तर दिया। युद्ध में उसके द्वारा प्रदर्शित उस हस्तलाघव को देखकर अर्जुन ने उसे सहन नहीं किया। धनञ्जय ने उसका धनुष काटकर, हे पृथापुत्र, शीघ्र ही कर्ण की छाती के मध्य में नौ बाणों से प्रहार किया। तत्पश्चात् धनञ्जय ने, जब वेग की अत्यन्त आवश्यकता थी, उस युद्ध में कर्ण के विनाश के लिये सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी एक बाण अत्यन्त वेग से छोड़ा। किन्तु द्रोणपुत्र अश्वत्थामा ने अर्धचन्द्राकार बाण से उस वेगपूर्वक आते हुए शर को काट दिया। अश्वत्थामा द्वारा काटा गया वह बाण पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा। तब महापराक्रमी सूतपुत्र ने, हे राजन्, दूसरा धनुष उठाया और पाण्डुपुत्र को सहस्रों बाणों से आच्छादित कर दिया। किन्तु पार्थ ने, जैसे वायु टिड्डियों के झुण्ड को तितर-बितर कर देती है, कर्ण के धनुष से निकले उस असाधारण बाण-वर्षा को अपने बाणों से तत्काल नष्ट कर दिया।
English Summary
in return, with ten arrows, on the field of battle. Then Satwata, O sire, pierced Kama with three arrows. And Bhimasena pierced him with three arrows, and Partha himself, once more, with seven. The mighty car-warrior, Kama, then pierced each of those three warriors with sixty arrows. And thus, O king, raged that battle between Kama alone (on one side) and the many (on the other). The prowess, O sire, that we then beheld of the Sutas son was wonderful in the extreme, since, excited with wrath in battle, he singly resisted those three great car- warriors. Then the mighty-armed Phalguna, in that battle, pierced Kama, the son of Vikartana, in all his limbs with a hundred arrows. All his limbs bathed in blood, the Sutas son of great prowess and brav- ery, pierced Phalguna in return with fifty arrows. Beholding that lightness of hand displayed by him in battle, Arjuna brooked It not. Cutting off his bow, that hero, viz., Dhananjaya, the son of Pritha, quickly pierced Kama in the centre of the chest with nine arrows, Then Dhananjaya, with great speed at a time, when speed was necess- ary shot in that battle a shaft of solar ^effulgence for the destruction of Kama. Drona's son. however, with a crescent-shaped arrow, cut off that shaft as It coursed impetuously (towards Kama). Thus cut off by Aswatthaman, that shaft fell down on the earth. Endued with great prowess, the Sutas son, then, O king, took up another bow, and covered the son of Pandu with several thousands of arrows. Partha, however, like the wind dispersing flight of locusts, dispelled with his own arrows that extraordinary shower of arrows issuing out of Kama's bow.
