धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा — हे सञ्जय, जब तुम सबके हृदय विकर्ण के पुत्र कर्ण की ओर उन्मुख हो गए, तब दुर्योधन ने आगे क्या किया? क्या मेरी सेना ने राधा के पुत्र कर्ण की ओर उसी प्रकार दृष्टि डाली, जैसे शीत से पीड़ित जन सूर्य की ओर निहारते हैं? सेनाओं के पीछे हटने के पश्चात जब युद्ध पुनः आरम्भ हुआ, तब हे सञ्जय, विकर्ण के पुत्र कर्ण ने किस प्रकार युद्ध किया? और समस्त पाण्डवों ने सूत-पुत्र के साथ किस प्रकार संग्राम किया? वह महाबाहु कर्ण अकेले ही पार्थों और सृञ्जयों का संहार करने में समर्थ है। युद्ध में कर्ण की भुजाओं का बल शक्र और विष्णु के समान है। उसके अस्त्र भयंकर हैं और उस महात्मा का पराक्रम भी उतना ही भीषण है। कर्ण पर आश्रित होकर ही राजा दुर्योधन ने युद्ध में अपना मन लगाया था। पाण्डु के पुत्र द्वारा दुर्योधन को अत्यन्त पीड़ित देखकर और पाण्डवों का महान पराक्रम प्रत्यक्ष होते देख, उस महारथी कर्ण ने क्या किया? हाय, मूढ़ दुर्योधन कर्ण पर भरोसा रखकर यह आशा करता था कि वह पार्थों को, उनके पुत्रों सहित और केशव सहित, युद्ध में परास्त कर देगा! हाय, यह अत्यन्त दुःख का विषय है कि कर्ण अपने बल से पाण्डव-पुत्रों को संग्राम में नहीं जीत सका! निःसन्देह, विधाता का विधान सर्वोपरि है। हाय, उस द्यूत-क्रीड़ा का भयावह परिणाम अब सामने आ गया! हाय, दुर्योधन के कर्मों से उत्पन्न ये हृदय-विदारक दुःख, जो असंख्य हैं और भयंकर शूलों के समान हैं, अब मुझे सहने पड़ रहे हैं, हे सञ्जय! हे तात, सुबल के पुत्र शकुनि को उस समय नीतिकुशल माना जाता था और कर्ण भी सदा राजा दुर्योधन के प्रति अत्यन्त अनुरक्त रहा। हाय, ऐसी स्थिति में भी, हे सञ्जय, मुझे अपने पुत्रों की बारम्बार पराजय और मृत्यु के समाचार क्यों सुनने पड़ रहे हैं? पाण्डवों का युद्ध में कोई प्रतिरोध नहीं कर सकता।
English Summary
Dhritarashtra said, "What did Duryodhana next do, O Smto, when the hearts of all of you turned towards Vikarna's son Kama ? Did my troops cast their eyes on Radha's son like persons afflicted with cold turning their gaze towards the Sun ? Upon the recommence- ment of the battle after the withdrawal of the troops, how, O San- jaya, did Vikarna's son Kama fight ? How also did all the Pandavas fight with the Suta'a son ? The mighty-armed Kama would, single- handed, slay the Parthas with the Srinjayas. The might of Kama's arms in battle equals that of Sakra or Vishnu. His weapons are fierce, and the prowess also of that high-souled one is fierce. Relying upon Kama, king Duryodhana had set his heart on battle. Beholding Duryodhana deeply afflicted by the son of Pandu, and seeing also the sons of Pandu displaying great prowess, what did that mighty car-warrior, »»2., Kama, do? Alas, the foolish Duryodhana, relying on Kama, hopeth to vanquish the Parthas with their sons and Kesava in battle I Alas, It is a matter of great grief that Kama could not, with his strength, overcome the sons of Pandu in fight ! Without doubt, Destiny is supreme. Alas, the terrible end of that gambling match hath now come ! Alas, these heart- rending sorrows, due to Duryodhana's acts, many in number and like unto terrible darts, are now being borne be me1, O Sanjaya I O sire, Suvala's son used to be then regarded as a politic person. Kama also is always exceedingly attached to king Duryodhana. Alas, when such is the case, O Sanjaya, why have I then to hear of the frequent defeats and deaths of my sons ? There is no one that can resist the Pandavas in battle.
