उन अग्नि-शिखाओं के साथ उनका रूप अत्यन्त भयंकर था। समस्त पृथ्वी अपने पर्वतों, जलराशियों और वृक्षों सहित काँप उठी। तब दो महर्षि — अर्थात् नारद, जो समस्त प्राणियों की आत्मा हैं, और समस्त भारत-राजकुमारों के पितामह व्यास — उन दोनों अस्त्रों को तीनों लोकों को दग्ध करते देख वहाँ प्रकट हुए। उन दोनों ऋषियों ने अश्वत्थामा और धनञ्जय, इन दोनों वीरों को शान्त करने का प्रयास किया। समस्त धर्मों के ज्ञाता और सभी प्राणियों के कल्याण की इच्छा रखने वाले वे दोनों महातेजस्वी मुनि उन दो प्रज्वलित अस्त्रों के मध्य में जा खड़े हुए। किसी भी शक्ति द्वारा अभिभूत न किये जा सकने वाले वे दोनों तेजस्वी ऋषि दोनों अस्त्रों के बीच में स्थित होकर दो प्रज्वलित अग्नियों के समान दीप्त हो उठे। किसी भी प्राणी द्वारा रोके न जा सकने वाले और देवताओं तथा दानवों द्वारा पूजित वे दोनों इस प्रकार दोनों अस्त्रों के तेज को शान्त करते हुए और समस्त जगत का कल्याण करते हुए वहाँ स्थित रहे। दोनों ऋषियों ने कहा — इस युद्ध में जो महारथी वीर गिरे हैं, वे अनेक प्रकार के अस्त्रों के ज्ञाता थे। तथापि उन्होंने कभी ऐसे अस्त्र का प्रयोग मनुष्यों पर नहीं किया। हे वीरो, तुम दोनों ने यह कैसा दुःसाहस कर डाला?
English Summary
terrible aspect with those flames of fire. The whole earth with her mountains and waters and trees, trembled. Then the two great RisKis, •<*., Narada who is the soul of every creature, and the grand-sire of all the Bharata princes, (viz.t Vyasa), beholding those two weapons scorching the three worlds, showed themselves there. The two Rishis sought to pacify the two heroes Aswatthaman and Dhananjaya. Conversant with all duties and desirous of the welfare of all creatures, the two sages, possessed of great energy, stood in the midst of those two blazing weapons. Incapable of being overwhelmed by any force, those two illustrious Kishis, placing themselves between the two weapons* stood like two blazing fires. Incapable of being checked by any creature endued with life, and adorned by the gods and Danavas, they two acted in this way, neutralising the energy of the two weapons and doing good to all the world.' "The two Rishis said, 'Those great car-warriors who have fallen in this battle were acquainted with diverse kinds of weapons. They, how- ever, never shot such a weapon upon human beings. What act of rashness is this, ye heroes, that ye have done ?' '
