सञ्जय ने कहा — रात्रि के बीत जाने पर राजाओं का घोर कोलाहल उठा और सब ओर से "व्यूह बनाओ! व्यूह बनाओ!" की पुकारें गूँजने लगीं। हे भारत, शङ्खों के नाद और सिंहनाद-सदृश नगाड़ों की गड़गड़ाहट, घोड़ों की हिनहिनाहट और रथ-चक्रों की खड़खड़ाहट, मतवाले हाथियों के चिंघाड़ने की ध्वनि, और युद्ध के लिए ललकारते वीरों के सिंहनाद, बाहुस्फोट तथा रणघोष से चारों दिशाएँ गूँज उठीं। हे राजन्, कुरुओं और पाण्डवों की विशाल सेनाएँ सूर्योदय के साथ उठीं और उन्होंने अपनी-अपनी व्यवस्था पूर्ण कर ली। जब सूर्य उदित हुआ, तब आपके पुत्रों और पाण्डवों, दोनों पक्षों के भयंकर आयुध और कवच तथा दोनों ओर की विशाल एवं भव्य सेनाएँ स्पष्ट दृष्टिगोचर होने लगीं। वहाँ सुवर्ण से अलंकृत हाथी और रथ बिजली से युक्त मेघों के समान दीप्तिमान दिख रहे थे। रथों की पंक्तियाँ इतनी विस्तृत थीं कि नगरों के समान प्रतीत होती थीं। और आपके पितामह भीष्म वहाँ पूर्ण चन्द्रमा के समान प्रकाशमान हो रहे थे। धनुष, खड्ग, कृपाण, गदा, शूल, भाला और अनेक प्रकार के दीप्तिमान अस्त्र-शस्त्र धारण किए हुए योद्धा अपनी-अपनी पंक्तियों में स्थान ग्रहण कर चुके थे। दोनों पक्षों के सहस्रों ध्वज, जो अनेक रूपों और आकारों के थे, फहराते हुए दिखाई दे रहे थे। सुवर्ण-निर्मित, रत्नजटित और अग्नि के समान दीप्त वे सहस्रों महातेजस्वी पताकाएँ ऐसी सुन्दर लग रही थीं जैसे कवचधारी वीर युद्ध की अभिलाषा से उन्हें निहार रहे हों। और अनेक श्रेष्ठ योद्धा, जिनके नेत्र वृषभ के नेत्रों के समान विशाल थे, तरकश धारण किए और हाथों में चर्म-रक्षा बाँधे, अपने-अपने दल के अग्रभाग में दीप्त शस्त्र उठाए खड़े थे।

Sanjaya said,-"When the night had passed away, loud became the >ise made by the kings, all exclaim ing, -Array I-Array 1-With the blare of conches and the sound of drums that resembled leonine roars O Bharata , with the neigh of steeds.and the clatter of car-wheels, with thenoise of obstreperous elephants and the shouts, clapping of arm-pits, and cries of roaring combatants, the din caused everywhere was very great. The large armies of the Kurus and the Pandavas, O king, rising at sunrise completed all their arrangements. Then when the Sun rose, the fierce' weapons of attack and defence and the coats of mail of both thy sons and the Pandavas, and the large and splendid armies of both sides became fully visible. There elephants and cars, adorned with gold looked resplendent like clouds mingled with lightning. The ranks of cars, standing in profusion, looked like cities. And thy father, stationed there, shone brilliantly, like the full moon. And the warriors armed with bows and swords and scimitars and maces, javelins and lances and bright weapons of diverse kinds, took up their positions in their (res- pective) ranks. And resplendent standards were seen, set up by thou- sands, of diverse forms, belonging to both ourselves and the foe. And made of gold and decked with gems and blazing like fire, those banners in thousands endued with great effulgence, looked beautiful like heroic combatants cased in mail gazed (at those standards), longing for battle. And many foremost of men, with eyes large as those of bulls endued with quivers, and with hands cased in (leathern) fences, stood at the heads of their divisions, with their bright weapons upraised.
