उनकी आज्ञा मानकर महाबाहु पाण्डव, कौरव सेना को आघात करते हुए, द्रोण के रथ की ओर इस प्रकार बढ़े जैसे हंस किसी सरोवर की ओर बढ़ते हैं। उस समय द्रोण के रथ के निकट चारों ओर से यह कोलाहल सुनाई पड़ रहा था — "पकड़ो इन्हें", "भागो मत", "भय मत करो", "काट डालो।" तब द्रोण और कृपाचार्य, कर्ण और द्रोण के पुत्र, राजा जयद्रथ, विन्द और अनुविन्द अवन्ती के, तथा शल्य — इन सबने उन वीरों का सामना किया। किन्तु वे अजेय और अप्रतिम योद्धा पाञ्चाल और पाण्डव, जो उच्च भावनाओं से प्रेरित थे, बाणों से पीड़ित होने पर भी द्रोण से विमुख नहीं हुए। तब द्रोण ने अत्यन्त क्रोध में आकर सैकड़ों बाण छोड़े और चेदि, पाञ्चाल तथा पाण्डव सेनाओं में भारी संहार मचाया। हे तात, उनकी प्रत्यञ्चा की टंकार और हथेलियों की थपकार चारों दिशाओं में सुनाई पड़ती थी, जो मेघ की गर्जना के समान थी और सबके हृदयों में भय उत्पन्न करती थी। इसी बीच, जिष्णु ने संशप्तकों की विशाल सेना को परास्त करके शीघ्र ही उस स्थान पर आ पहुँचे जहाँ द्रोण पाण्डव सेना को पीस रहे थे। रक्त के जल से भरी, बाणों की भयंकर तरंगों और भँवरों से युक्त अनेक विशाल सरोवरों को पार करके और संशप्तकों का वध करके, फाल्गुनी वहाँ प्रकट हुए। अपार यश से सम्पन्न और सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी अर्जुन की ध्वजा पर अंकित वानर का चिह्न हमें दीप्तिमान दिखाई दिया। जैसे सूर्य अपनी किरणों से सागर को सुखा देता है, उसी प्रकार पाण्डुपुत्र ने अपने बाणरूपी किरणों से संशप्तक-सागर को सुखाकर कुरुओं पर भी प्रहार किया, मानो युगान्त के समय उदित होने वाला प्रलयकालीन सूर्य ही हो। अर्जुन ने अपने अस्त्रों की ताप से समस्त कुरुओं को इस प्रकार झुलसा दिया जैसे सूर्य —।
English Summary
Obeying his behest, the mighty-armed Pandavas, smiting ( the Kaurava army ) proceeded towards Drona's car like swans towards a lake, — 'Seize him', — 'Do not jly aivay, — Do not fear,— Cut into pieces', — these uproarious cries were heard in the vicinity of Drona's car. Then Drona and Kripa, and Kama and Drona's son, and king Jayadratha, and Vinda and Anu- vinda of Avanti, and Salya, received those heroes. Those irresistible and invincible warriors, however, viz., the Panchalas and the Pandavas, inspired by noble sentiments, did not, though afflicted with shafts, avoid Drona. Then Drona, excited with great rage, shot hundreds of shafts, and caused a great carnage amongst the Chedis, the Panchalas, and the Pandavas. The twang of his bowstring and the slaps of his palms, were, O sire, heard on all sides. And they resembled the roar of thunder and struck fear into the hearts of all. Meanwhile, Jishnu, having vanquished large numbers of Samsapta~kast quickly came to that place where Drona was grinding the Pandav a troops. Having crossed many large lakes whose waters were constituted by blood, and whose fierce billows and eddies were constituted by shafts, and having slain the Samsaptakas, Phalguni showed himself there. Possessed of great fame and endued as he was with the energy of the Sun himself, Arjuna's emblem, viz., his banner bearing the ape, was beheld by us to blaze with splendour. Having dried up the SamsaptaJca ocean by means of weapons that constituted his rays, the son of Pandu then blasted the Kurus also, as if he were the very Sun that rises at the end of the Yuga.
