राजा नील ने उस नरेश पर प्रसन्नता प्रकट की। तब अग्नि ने, जो समस्त इच्छाओं को पूर्ण करने वाले हैं, उस राजा से कोई वर माँगने को कहा। राजा ने यह वर माँगा कि युद्ध में उनकी सेना कभी भयभीत न हो। हे राजन्, तब से जो भी नरेश अज्ञानवश राजा नील की नगरी को जीतने की इच्छा करते हैं, वे हुतासन अर्थात् अग्नि द्वारा भस्म कर दिए जाते हैं। हे कुरुवंश के रक्षक, तब से माहिष्मती नगरी की कन्याएँ अन्य लोगों को विवाह के लिए अग्राह्य हो गईं। अग्नि ने अपने वर से उन्हें स्वतन्त्र आचरण का अधिकार दे दिया, जिससे उस नगरी की स्त्रियाँ सदा स्वेच्छा से विचरती हैं और किसी एक पति से आबद्ध नहीं रहतीं। हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ, तब से अन्य देशों के नरेश अग्नि के भय से इस नगरी का परित्याग करते हैं। धर्मात्मा सहदेव ने जब देखा कि उनकी सेना भय से व्याकुल है और चारों ओर से अग्नि की लपटों से घिरी हुई है, तब वे स्वयं पर्वत की भाँति अविचल खड़े रहे। तब उस वीर ने स्वयं को शुद्ध कर जल का स्पर्श किया और सब कुछ को पवित्र करने वाले देव अग्नि को इन वचनों से सम्बोधित किया हे अग्नि, मैं तुम्हें प्रणाम करता हूँ — तुम्हारा मार्ग सदा धुएँ से चिह्नित रहता है। मेरे ये सभी प्रयास तुम्हारे लिए ही हैं। हे सर्वपावन, तुम देवताओं का मुख हो और साक्षात् यज्ञस्वरूप हो। तुम सब कुछ पवित्र करते हो, इसलिए तुम "पावक" कहलाते हो, और घृत को वहन करते हो, इसलिए "हव्यवाहन" कहलाते हो। वेदों का प्रादुर्भाव तुम्हारी सेवा के लिए हुआ, इसलिए तुम "जातवेद" कहलाते हो। देवताओं में श्रेष्ठ होने के कारण तुम चित्रभानु, अनल, विभावसु, हुताशन, ज्वलन, शिखी, वैश्वानर, पिङ्गेश, प्लवङ्ग और भूरितेजस् — इन नामों से जाने जाते हो। कुमार कार्तिकेय की उत्पत्ति तुमसे ही हुई। तुम पवित्र हो, तुम रुद्रगर्भ और हिरण्यकृत् कहलाते हो। हे अग्नि, तुम मुझे तेज प्रदान करो; वायु मुझे प्राण दे; पृथ्वी मुझे पोषण और बल दे; और जल मुझे समृद्धि प्रदान करे। हे अग्नि, तुम जल के आदिकारण हो, महापवित्र हो, तुम्हारी सेवा के लिए वेद प्रकट हुए, तुम देवताओं में अग्रणी हो और उनका मुख हो — अपनी सत्यशक्ति से मुझे पवित्र करो। ऋषि और ब्राह्मण, देवता और असुर — सभी यज्ञों में प्रतिदिन विधिपूर्वक तुम्हारे भीतर घृत की आहुति देते हैं। उन यज्ञों में जब तुम प्रकट होते हो, तब तुमसे निकलने वाली सत्य की किरणें मुझे पवित्र करें। हे धूमध्वज, हे ज्वालाओं से युक्त, हे वायु से उत्पन्न महापावन, हे समस्त प्राणियों में सदा विद्यमान रहने वाले — अपनी सत्य की किरणों से मुझे पवित्र करो। हे परमश्रेष्ठ, इस प्रकार प्रसन्नचित्त होकर स्वयं को पवित्र करके मैं तुम्हारी प्रार्थना करता हूँ। हे अग्नि, मुझे अब सन्तोष और समृद्धि, ज्ञान और आनन्द प्रदान करो।
English Summary
Nila, became gracious unto that monarch. And Agni, the illustrious gratifier of all desires also asked the monarch to beg a boon of him. And the king begged that his troops might never be struck with panic while engaged in battle. And from that time, O king, those monarchs who from ignorance of this, desire to subjugate king Nila's city, arc consumed by Hutasana (Agni). And from that time, O perpetuator of the Kuru race, the girls of the city of Mahishmati became rather unacceptable to others (as wives). And Agni by his boon granted them sexual liberty, so that the women of that town always roam about at will, each unbound to a particular husbanJ. And, O bull of the Bharata race, from that time the monarchs (of other countries) forsake this city for fear of Agni. And the virtuous Sahadeva, beholding his troops afflicted with fear and surrounded by flames of fire, himself stood there immovable as a mountain. And purifying himself and touching water, the hero (Sahadeva) then addressed Agni, the god that sanctifieth every- thing, in these words : 'I bow unto thee, O thou, whose track is always marked with smoke. These my exertions are all for thee. O thou sanctifier of all, thou art the mouth of the gods and thou art Sacrifice personified. Thou art called Pavaka because thou sanctifiest everything, and thou art Havyavahana, because thou carriest the clarified butter that is poured on thee. The Vedas have sprung for ministering unto thee, and, therefore, thou art called Jataveda. Chief of the gods as thou art, thou art called Chitrabhanu, Anala, Vibhavasu, Hutasana, Jvalana, Sikhi, Vaiswanara, Pingesa, Plavanga, Bhuritejah. Thou art he from whom Kumara (Kartikeya) had his origin ; thou art holy ; thou art called Rudragarva and Hiranyakrit. Let thee, O Agni, grant me energy, let Vayu grant me life, let Earth grant me nourishment and strength, and let Water grant me prosperity. O Agni, thou who art the first cause of the waters, thou who art of great purity, thou for ministering unto whom the Vedas have sprung, thou who art the foremost of the deities, thou who art their mouth, O purify me by thy truth. Rishis and Brahraanas, Deities and Asuras pour clarified butter every day, according to the ordinance into thee during sacrifices. Let the rays of truth emanating from thee, while thou exhibitest thyself in those sacrifices, purify me. Smoke-bannered as thou art and possessed of flames, thou great purifier from all sins born of Vayu and ever present as thou art in all creatures, O purify me by the rays of thy truth. Having cleansed myself thus cheerfully, O exalted one, do I pray unto thee. O Agni, grant me now contentment and prosperity, and knowledge and gladness. 10 74 MAHABHARATA
