वैशम्पायन ने कहा — उस वीरों की सभा में वासुदेव ने रोती हुई द्रौपदी से इस प्रकार कहा, "हे सुन्दरी, जिन पर तुम्हारा क्रोध है, उनकी पत्नियाँ भी तुम्हारी ही भाँति रोएँगी — जब वे अपने पतियों को रणभूमि पर मृत पड़े देखेंगी, रक्त में लथपथ और विवत्सु के बाणों से उनके शरीर छिदे हुए होंगे। हे देवि, रोओ मत, क्योंकि मैं पाण्डुपुत्रों के लिए अपनी पूर्ण शक्ति से प्रयत्न करूँगा। मैं प्रतिज्ञा करता हूँ — तुम पुनः राजाओं की रानी बनोगी। आकाश गिर जाए, हिमवान् फट जाए, पृथ्वी विदीर्ण हो जाए, समुद्र का जल सूख जाए — परन्तु मेरे वचन कभी निष्फल नहीं होंगे।" अच्युत के ये वचन सुनकर द्रौपदी ने अपने तृतीय पति अर्जुन की ओर तिरछी दृष्टि से देखा। तब हे महाराज, अर्जुन ने द्रौपदी से कहा — "हे सुन्दर ताम्रनयनी, शोक मत करो। हे यशस्विनी, जो मधुसूदन ने कहा है, वही होगा। हे सुन्दरी, यह अन्यथा नहीं हो सकता।" धृष्टद्युम्न ने कहा — मैं द्रोण का वध करूँगा, शिखण्डी पितामह का वध करेगा। भीमसेन दुर्योधन का वध करेगा और धनञ्जय कर्ण का। हे बहन, राम और कृष्ण की सहायता से हम युद्ध में वृत्रहन्ता इन्द्र के लिए भी अजेय हैं — फिर धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों की क्या गणना? वैशम्पायन ने कहा — ये वचन कहे जाने के पश्चात् वहाँ उपस्थित सभी वीरों ने वासुदेव की ओर मुख किया, और तब वे उन सबके मध्य इस प्रकार बोलने लगे।
English Summary
Vaisampayana continued, "In that assembly of heroes Vasudeva then spake unto the weeping Darupadi as follows, 'O fair lady, the Wives of those with whom thou art angry, shall weep even like thee, beholding their husbands dead on the ground, weltering in blood and their bodies covered with the arrows of Vivatsu I Weep not, lady, for I will exert to the utmost of my power for the sons of Pandu ! I promise thou shalt (once more) be the Queen of kings ! The heavens might fall, or the Himavat might split, the earth might be rent, or the waters of the ocean might dry up, but my words shall never be futile !' Hearing those Words of Achyuta in reply, Draupadi looked obliquely at her third husband (Arjuna). And, O mighty king, Arjuna said unto Dfatlpadi, 4O thou of beautiful coppery eyes, grieve not! O illustrious one, It shall be even as the slayer of Madhu hath said t It can never be other- Wise, O beautiful one !' ' "Dhrishtadyumna said,. 1 will slay Drona, Sikhandin will slay the grandfather. And Bhimasena Will slay Duryadhana* and Dhananjaya YANA PABYA 85 will slay Kama. And, O sister, assisted by Rama and Krishna, we are invincible in battle by even the slayer himself of Vritra — what are the «ons of Dhritarashtra ?' " Vaisampayana continued, "After these words had been spoken, all the heroes there turned their faces towards Vasudeva, who then in their midst began to speak as follows."
