जिस प्रकार स्कन्द ने असुर-सेना का संहार किया था, उसी प्रकार सुभद्रा के पुत्र ने अपने तीक्ष्ण बाणों से अकेले ही तुम्हारी सेना के विशाल पैदल-दलों को सब ओर से छिन्न-भिन्न कर दिया। जैसे अपरिमित तेज वाले त्रिनेत्र महादेव ने भयंकर असुर-सेना को कुचल डाला था, वैसे ही अर्जुन के पुत्र ने रणभूमि में ऐसे पराक्रम किए जो शत्रुओं के लिए असह्य थे। सुभद्रा-पुत्र द्वारा अपनी सेना का यह व्यापक संहार देखकर तुम्हारे योद्धा और तुम्हारे पुत्र चारों ओर शून्य दृष्टि से देखने लगे। उनके मुख सूख गए, नेत्र चंचल हो उठे, शरीर पसीने से भीग गए और रोंगटे खड़े हो गए। शत्रु को जीत पाने की आशा छोड़कर उनके मन रणभूमि से पलायन करने को आतुर हो उठे। प्राण बचाने की इच्छा से वे एक-दूसरे को नाम और कुल के नाम से पुकारने लगे और अपने घायल पुत्रों, पिताओं, भाइयों, बन्धुओं तथा सम्बन्धियों को रणभूमि में पड़ा छोड़कर, घोड़ों और हाथियों को पूरी गति से हाँकते हुए भागने का प्रयत्न करने लगे।
English Summary
1 Janghas, etc., are diverse limbs of oars used in battle. — T. 80 MAHABHABATA three-eyed (Mahadeva) of immeasurable energy crushing the terrible Asura host. Indeed, Arjuna's son, having achieved in battle feats in- capable of being borne by his foes, everywhere mangled large divisions of foot-soldiers belonging to thy army. Beholding then thy host extensively slaughtered by Subhadra's son single-handed with his whetted shafts like the Asura, host by Skanda ( the celestial genera- lissimo ), thy warriors and thy sons cast vacant looks on all sides. Their mouths became dry ; their eyes became restless ; their bodies were covered with sweat ; and their hairs stood on their ends. Hopeless of vanquishing their foe, they set their hearts on flying away from the field. Desirous of saving their lives, called one another by their names and the names of their families, and abandoning their wounded sons and sires and brothers and kinsmen and relatives by marriage lying around on the field, they endeavoured to fly away, urging their steeds and elephants ( to their utmost speed ).' "
