वह बाण — जो दिव्यास्त्र के रूप में परिणत हो चुका था, जो किसी भी आघात को सहन करने में समर्थ था, और जिसकी सदा धूप और पुष्पमालाओं से पूजा की जाती थी — गाण्डीव से छूटकर तीव्र गति से चला और जयद्रथ का मस्तक उस प्रकार काट ले गया, जैसे कोई बाज वृक्ष की चोटी से किसी छोटे पक्षी को झपट ले जाता है। तत्पश्चात् धनञ्जय ने अपने बाणों से उस मस्तक को आकाश में ही थामे रखा, उसे भूमि पर नहीं गिरने दिया। शत्रुओं को शोक देने और मित्रों को आनन्दित करने के लिए पाण्डुपुत्र ने बार-बार बाण चलाते हुए उस मस्तक को समन्तपञ्चक की सीमा के बाहर पहुँचा दिया। इसी बीच, हे तात, तुम्हारे जामाता के पिता, महातेजस्वी राजा वृद्धक्षत्र, सन्ध्यावन्दन में निमग्न थे। जयद्रथ का वह मस्तक — जो काले केशों से सुशोभित था और कुण्डलों से अलंकृत था — बैठकर प्रार्थना करते हुए वृद्धक्षत्र की गोद में जा गिरा। हे शत्रुताड़न, गोद में गिरा वह कुण्डलधारी मस्तक राजा वृद्धक्षत्र को दिखा नहीं। किन्तु जब वे प्रार्थना समाप्त करके उठे, तो वह मस्तक अचानक भूमि पर जा गिरा। और जैसे ही जयद्रथ का मस्तक भूमि पर गिरा, हे शत्रुताड़न, वृद्धक्षत्र का मस्तक सौ टुकड़ों में फट गया। यह देखकर समस्त प्राणी विस्मय से भर गए और सभी ने वासुदेव तथा महाबली विभत्सु की भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा की।
English Summary
324 MAHABHABATA into a celestial weapon, which was capable of bearing any strain, and which had always been worshipped with incense and garlands. That shaft, sped from Gandiva, coursing swiftly, snatched Jayadratha's head away, like a hawk snatching away a smaller bird from the top of a tree. Dhananjaya, then, with his shafts, sent that head along in the welkin (without allowing It to fall down). For grieving his foes and gladdening his friends, the son of Pandu, by shooting his shafts repeatedly at It, sent that head outside the limits of Samantapanchaka. Meanwhile, king Vriddhakshatra, the father of thy son-in-law, endued with great energy, was, O sire, engaged in his evening prayers. Decked with black locks and adorned with ear-rings, that head of Jayadratha was thrown upon Vriddhakshatra' s lap, as the latter was saying his prayers in a sitting posture. Thus thrown on his lap, that head decked with ear-rings, O chastiser of foes, was not seen by king Vriddhakshatra. As the latter, however, stood up after finishing his prayers It suddenly fell down on the earth. And as the head of Jayadratha fell down on the earth, the head of Vriddhakshatra, O chastiser of foes, cracked into a hundred pieces. At the sight of this, all creatures were filled with wonder. And all of them applauded Vasudeva and the mighty Vibhatsu.
