दुर्योधन ने कहा — हे मद्रराज, एक बार फिर सुनो, जो मैं तुमसे कहना चाहता हूँ। प्राचीन काल में देवों और असुरों के बीच जो युद्ध हुआ था, उसके विषय में महर्षि मार्कण्डेय ने मेरे पिता को यह वृत्तान्त सुनाया था। हे राजर्षिश्रेष्ठ, मैं अब वह सब तुम्हें बिना किसी अंश को छोड़े सुनाता हूँ। उस वृत्तान्त को पूर्ण विश्वास के साथ, बिना किसी सन्देह के, सुनो। देवों और असुरों के बीच, जो एक-दूसरे को परास्त करने की इच्छा रखते थे, एक महाभयंकर युद्ध हुआ, हे राजन्, जिसका मूल कारण तारक था। हमने सुना है कि उस युद्ध में दैत्य देवों से पराजित हुए। दैत्यों की पराजय के पश्चात् तारक के तीन पुत्र — तारकाक्ष, कमलाक्ष और विद्युन्मालिन — हे राजन्, अत्यन्त कठोर तपस्या में लीन हो गए और उच्च व्रतों का पालन करने लगे। उस तपस्या से उन्होंने अपने शरीरों को क्षीण कर लिया, हे शत्रुतापन। उनके संयम, तपस्या, व्रत और ध्यान से प्रसन्न होकर वरदायी पितामह ब्रह्मा ने उन्हें वर देने का निश्चय किया। तब उन तीनों ने मिलकर समस्त लोकों के पितामह से यह वर माँगा, हे राजन्, कि किसी भी प्राणी के हाथों, किसी भी काल में, उनकी मृत्यु न हो। तब समस्त लोकों के दिव्य स्वामी ने उनसे कहा — "सभी प्राणियों से अवध्यता जैसा कोई वर सम्भव नहीं है। अतः हे असुरो, ऐसी प्रार्थना मत करो। कोई अन्य वर माँगो जो तुम्हें अभीष्ट हो।" तब वे सब, हे राजन्, बहुत विचार-विमर्श के पश्चात् आपस में निर्णय करके समस्त लोकों के उस महान् स्वामी को प्रणाम करके बोले — "हे देव, हे पितामह, हमें यह वर दीजिए। हम तीन नगरों में निवास करते हुए, आपकी कृपा को सदा अपने समक्ष रखते हुए, इस पृथ्वी पर विचरण करेंगे।"
English Summary
"Duryodhana said, 'Listen, once more, O ruler of the Madras, to what I will say unto thee, about what happened, O lord, in the battle between the gods and the Asuras in days of yore. The great Rishi Markandeya narrated It to my sire. I will now recite It without leaving out anything, O best of royal sages. Listen to that account confidingly and without mistrusting It at all. Between the gods and the Asuras, each desirous of vanquishing the other, there happened a great battle, O king, which had Taraka for its evil (root). It hath been heard by us that the Daityas were defeated by the gods. Upon the defeat of the Daityas, the three sons of Taraka, named Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha and Vidyunmalin, O king, practising the austerest penances, lived in the observance of high vows. By those penances they emaciated their bodies, O scorcher of foes. In consequence of their self-restraint, their penan- ces, their vows and contemplation, the boon-giving Grandsire be- came gratified with them and gave them boons. Unitedly they solicited the Grandsire of all the worlds, O king, for the boon of immunity from death at the hands of all Creatures of all times. The divine Lord and Master of all the worlds said unto them, 'There is nothing like immunity from death at the hands of all crea- tures. Therefore, ye Asuras, abstain from such a prayer. Solicit some other boon that may seem desirable to you.' When all of them, O king, having settled It amongst themselves after long and repeated con- ferences, bowed to the great Master of all the worlds and said these words, 'O god, O Grandsire, give us this boon. Residing in three cities, we will rove over this Earth, with thy grace ever before us.
