कण्व ने कहा — हे गान्धारी-पुत्र, तू तब तक ही जीवित है जब तक तू युद्ध में पाण्डु के वीर पुत्रों के सामने नहीं आता। भीम, जो वायु के महाबली पुत्र और प्रहारकों में अग्रणी हैं, तथा इन्द्र-पुत्र धनञ्जय — इन दोनों से युद्ध में कौन बच सकता है? स्वयं विष्णु, वायु, धर्म और अश्विनीकुमार — ये सब देवता तेरे शत्रु हैं। उनसे सामना करना तो दूर, रणभूमि में उनकी ओर दृष्टि उठाने की भी तुझमें सामर्थ्य नहीं है। इसलिए, हे राजकुमार, युद्ध का विचार अपने मन से निकाल दे। वासुदेव के माध्यम से सन्धि कर ले। इसी में तेरे कुल का कल्याण है। इस महातपस्वी नारद ने स्वयं अपनी आँखों से विष्णु की उस महिमा का साक्षात्कार किया है जो मैंने तुझे सुनाई है। और जान ले कि यही कृष्ण वह चक्र और गदाधारी हैं। वैशम्पायन ने कहा — ऋषि के ये वचन सुनकर दुर्योधन ने भौंहें सिकोड़ लीं और भारी साँसें लेने लगा। फिर उसने कर्ण की ओर दृष्टि डाली और ठहाका मारकर हँस पड़ा। ऋषि के वचनों को तुच्छ जानकर उस दुष्ट ने अपनी हथेली से अपनी उस जाँघ पर ताल ठोंकी जो हाथी की सूँड़ के समान थी। फिर ऋषि को सम्बोधित करते हुए उसने कहा — हे महर्षि, मैं वैसा ही हूँ जैसा विधाता ने मुझे बनाया है। जो होना है, वह होकर रहेगा। मेरे भाग्य में जो लिखा है, वह घटित होगा ही। मैं उससे अन्यथा नहीं कर सकता। तो फिर इन निरर्थक उपदेशों से क्या प्रयोजन?
English Summary
"Kanwa continued, — 'In the same way, O son of Gandbari, thou livest, O son, as long as thou approachest not the heroic sons of Pandu in battle- Who is there whom Bhima, that foremost of smiters, that mighty son of Vayu and Dhananjaya, the son of Indra, cannot slay in battle ? Vishnu himself, and Vayu and Dharma, and the Aswins, — these gods are thy enemies. Let alone an encounter with them, thou art not competent even to look at them on the field. Therefore, O prince, do not set thy heart upon war ; let peace be made through the agency of Vasudeva. It behoveth thee to save thy race thus. This great ascetic Narada witnessed with his own eyes the incident (I have related to thee) which shows the greatness of Vishnu, and know that this Krishna is that bearer of the discus and the mace !' ' Vaisampayana continued, — "Hearing these words of the Rishi, Duryodhana contracted his eyebrows and began to breathe heavily. And casting his eyes then on Radha's son, he burst out into a loud laughter. And setting at naught those words of the Rishi, that wicked wretch began to slap his thigh that resembled the trunk of an elephant. And address- ing the Rishi, he said,— 'I am, O great Rifhi, precisely what the Creator hath made me. What is to be, must be. What also hath been ordained in my case must happen, I cannot act otherwise, What can these senseless declamations, therefore, avail ?'
