शल्य ने कहा — हे कर्ण, अंग देश में, जिसके तुम राजा हो, पीड़ितों का परित्याग और पत्नी-पुत्रों का विक्रय — ये दोष प्रचलित हैं। रथी और अतिरथियों की गणना के अवसर पर भीष्म ने तुम्हारे जो दोष गिनाए थे, उन्हें स्मरण करो और अपना क्रोध त्यागो। क्रोध मत करो। ब्राह्मण सर्वत्र मिलते हैं, क्षत्रिय भी सर्वत्र मिलते हैं, वैसे ही वैश्य और शूद्र भी। हे कर्ण, पवित्र आचरण वाली और उत्तम व्रत धारण करने वाली स्त्रियाँ भी सर्वत्र पाई जाती हैं। सर्वत्र मनुष्य परस्पर परिहास करते हैं और एक-दूसरे को आहत करते हैं। कामी पुरुष भी सर्वत्र होते हैं। दूसरों के दोष गिनाने में चतुरता तो सभी को, सदा ही प्राप्त होती है। किन्तु अपने दोषों को कोई नहीं जानता, और जो जानता भी है, वह लज्जित नहीं होता। सर्वत्र राजा अपने-अपने धर्म में निष्ठावान हैं और दुष्टों को दण्ड देने में संलग्न हैं। सर्वत्र सदाचारी पुरुष भी पाए जाते हैं। हे कर्ण, यह सम्भव नहीं कि किसी देश के सभी लोग पापी हों। अनेक देशों में ऐसे मनुष्य हैं जो अपने आचरण से देवताओं को भी पार कर जाते हैं। सञ्जय ने कहा — तब राजा दुर्योधन ने कर्ण और शल्य के इस वाक्-युद्ध को रोका। उसने राधापुत्र को मित्रवत् सम्बोधित किया और शल्य से हाथ जोड़कर विनती की। हे महाराज, आपके पुत्र ने कर्ण को शान्त किया और उसने आगे कुछ न कहने का संयम धारण किया। तब शल्य ने भी शत्रु की ओर मुख किया। फिर राधापुत्र ने मुस्कुराते हुए एक बार और शल्य को प्रेरित करते हुए कहा — आगे बढ़ो।

Everywhere men take delight in jesting with men and wounding one another. Lustful men also may be found everywhere. Every one on every occasion can command skill in speaking of the faults of others. No one, however, knows his own faults, or knowing them, feels shame. Everywhere are kings devoted to their respectiv e religions, and employed in chastising the wicked. Everywhere may be found virtuous men. It cannot be, O Kama, that all the people of a country are sinful. There are men in many countries that surpass the very gods by their behaviour.' " Sanjaya continued, "Then king Duryodhana stopped Kama and Salya (from going on with their wordy warfare), addressing the son of Radha as a friend, and beseeching Salya with joined hands. Kama, O sire, was quieted by thy son and forbore saying anything more. Salya also then faced the enemy.
